THE OPPORTUNITY 

Edmonton Biosphere Eco-City (EBEC) is seeking new members for a team that is developing a 

Database of Sustainability Projects. The database allows residents to have an overview of the

BACKGROUND 

A Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) is an urban-centred region where teams educate and engage 

people in activities to develop a culture of sustainability. BEC Canada (BECC) is a national 

charity that supports development of BECs in Ottawa, Toronto, Brampton, Edmonton, and 

Vancouver. 


ORGANIZATION OF THE DATABASE 

The framework of the database is the 10 BEC Themes of Sustainability – Transportation, 

Energy, Design, Habitat, Food, Natural Capital, Waste, Health, Recreation, and Sense of Place. 

These are broad areas of direct action for sustainability. Organizing the database by Theme 

allows viewers to focus on areas that interest them most. 

TASKS OF A DATABASE TEAM MEMBER 

To find a sustainability project in urban or rural Edmonton a team member will conduct an 

internet search using one of the Themes of Sustainability or a related keyword, along with 

"Edmonton" and "sustainability." They will review project descriptions and select relevant 

ones to add to the database. Next, they will write a concise description using a project 

template. Once completed, they will contact the project owner to verify the description. 

Additionally, team members are expected to attend monthly team meetings. The time 

expectation for volunteers is a flexible 3-4 hours per week. 


A team leader will provide training material and advice to team members.

Would you like to help make our cities more sustainable? 
 
You could help us maintain Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) websites. A Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) uses 
information and projects to engage people in sustainability. The national website

THE VOLUNTEER WORK 
 
Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC) is seeking two or three Web Development volunteers to 
update WordPress websites for four BEC cities. Those websites are Toronto.BioEcoCity.org, 
Brampton.BioEcoCity.org, Edmonton.BioEcoCity.org, and Vancouver.BioEcoCity.org. 
 
Currently, seven BEC project teams operate in the four cities. Up-to-date websites are important 
for success of the projects. At times, new project information needs to be added to the sites. 
Content will be provided. As a volunteer web developer, you will input and format that material. 
 
In addition to new team projects, there is an initiative to create a Database of Sustainability 
Projects for each city. This allows residents of the city to see the good works going on around 
them. The database is a set of short project summaries that are input to a template (child 
theme) on each site and published. New database postings may happen every week or two. 
 
Your work would be done remotely, with flexible times, in cooperation with staff and volunteers. 
The expected time commitment for these positions is 3-4 hours per week for six months. 
 
To be able to do this work, you would need experience with WordPress, HTML and CSS. It would 
be nice also if you had experience with cPanel.

Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care is one of Canada’s largest and most respected not-for-

profit organizations providing culturally appropriate, person-centred care for seniors. Since its 

founding in 1994, Yee Hong has delivered a full continuum of services to over 15,000 seniors 

annually across the Greater Toronto Area, from active seniors’ programs and home support to 

long-term care and palliative care. Rooted in a vision of enabling seniors to live their lives to the 

fullest, with independence, health and dignity, Yee Hong blends clinical excellence with cultural 

humility and innovation. With deep expertise serving Asian Canadian communities, including 

Chinese, Japanese, South Asian and Filipino seniors, Yee Hong continues to evolve as a leader 

in equitable, inclusive care that meets the diverse needs of Canada’s aging population. 

Yee Hong is currently inviting nominations and applications for the role of Board Director. This 

is an exciting opportunity for values-driven leaders to contribute to an award-winning 

organization entering a period of meaningful expansion, including the opening of its fifth long-

term care home in 2026. 

Director Responsibilities 

Board members contribute their leadership across three core areas of governance: 

1. Strategy - Shape and approve Yee Hong’s multi-year strategic plans; Guide major initiatives 

such as digital innovation, philanthropic growth, capital development (e.g., Finch II), and care 

model advancement; Strengthen partnerships and system integration to expand Yee Hong’s 

impact across the continuum of care; Support CEO oversight, performance evaluation, and 

succession planning. 

2. Culture - Champion Yee Hong’s values of caring, collaboration, and commitment in all 

Board deliberations; Promote culturally appropriate, person-centred, and spiritually attuned care 

that reflects the lived experiences of seniors and their families; Actively foster an inclusive 

governance culture that centres equity, diversity, reconciliation, and accessibility; Engage 

with stakeholders in a spirit of curiosity, humility, and service. 

3. Risk - Ensure fiduciary responsibility and long-term financial sustainability; Oversee 

enterprise risk management, including compliance, quality of care, workforce capacity, and 

infrastructure investment; Provide governance leadership on emerging risks tied to aging

demographics, workforce shortages, regulatory change, and capital expansion; Serve on at

Qualifications 

Among the qualifications being sought in candidates, the incoming leader must have a deep and 

abiding commitment to advancing reconciliation, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in 

all its forms and must believe, intrinsically, in the importance of leading with curiosity and 

welcoming ideas that can later be synthesized and turned into possibility. While all candidates 

are encouraged to apply and, in so doing, share how they see themselves adding value to the 

Yee Hong environment, the following credentials and/or experiences are seen as possible 

markers of the candidates most likely to realize success in the role: 

 • A passion for enabling seniors to age with dignity, inclusion, and purpose across a full 

continuum of culturally appropriate care; 

 • Strong experience in government relations, public policy, or partnership 

development, especially within health, housing, or social services sectors, to help 

advance Yee Hong’s role as a system partner and sector leader; 

 • Lived or professional experience in aging, health care, senior services, or system 

integration; 

 • Expertise in any of the following: governance, finance, law, clinical quality, risk 

management, advocacy, digital innovation, or capital development; 

 • A collaborative leadership style rooted in cultural humility, curiosity, and a deep respect 

for equity, diversity, and inclusion. 

Time Commitment 

Board Directors serve a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional 

terms. The Board meets six to nine times per year (2–3 hours per meeting), and members are 

expected to serve on at least one committee (quarterly meetings). Participation in an annual 

orientation and a full-day strategic retreat is required. Special meetings may be called as 

needed.
