About the Courage to Act Foundation
The Courage to Act Foundation (C2AF) is a national non-profit focused on addressing sexual and gender-based violence at Canadian post-secondary institutions. We collaborate with survivors, communities, governments, and public and private institutions to co-design supports, systems and strategies for safer, more inclusive campuses.
About the At the Root Project
Women and gender-diverse students deserve to learn, work and thrive in their careers. However, they are at a high risk of being subjected to sexual violence or harassment when they pursue science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) professions. We are working to remove barriers at the root in STEM co-ops, internships and other experiential learning opportunities.
About the Role
The Treasurer of the Board provides financial oversight and stewardship of the organization’s resources. They review financial reports prepared by staff, accountants and auditors to help keep the Board informed of financial matters and ensure financial records and controls are properly maintained. The Treasurer monitors the organization’s financial performance, identifies any funding gaps or other items of concern, and reports them promptly to the Board, along with recommendations. In collaboration with the Board Chair, Executive Director, and Operations Lead (or equivalent leadership), the Treasurer supports the development of annual budgets, financial forecasts, and funding strategies, helping to align financial planning with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
Key Responsibilities include
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Provide strategic financial guidance to the Board, ensuring the financial implications of strategic plans, major initiatives, and organizational decisions are well understood and sustainable.
- Ensure the organization’s assets are protected and invested responsibly.
- Assess proposed budgets and financial plans and provide recommendations to the Board regarding their approval or revision.
- Present key findings and reports to the Board based on analyzed data from financial statements, balance sheets, cashflows, expense reports, reconciliation reports, and profit and loss reports.
- Develop and implement financial policies that guide the organization's use of funds, which may include gift acceptance, expense reimbursement, and compensation policies.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks such as fraud, theft, and non-compliance with non-profit reporting, and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
Oversight of Financial Operations
- Provide Board-level oversight of the organization's financial management practices and internal controls.
- Oversee the annual audit in collaboration with staff, accountants, and auditors, ensuring the Board is informed of audit findings and all financial matters.
- Review the auditor's recommendations and oversee their implementation.
- Review monthly financial reports, compare expenses with approved budgets and income, and identify trends, variances, and potential areas of concern.
- Ensure appropriate financial controls, record-keeping practices, and reporting processes are in place and functioning effectively.
- Ensure tax forms and filings are completed accurately and on time.
- Work closely with the Board Chair, Executive Director, and Operations Lead to support sound financial planning, forecasting, and stewardship.
Qualifications
- Previous Board governance experience preferred, including experience serving in a financial oversight role such as Treasurer, Finance Committee member, or equivalent.
- Education, training or professional experience in finance, accounting, auditing, business administration, or other related fields, as well as knowledge of how those concepts apply to nonprofit organizations.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, accounting principles, internal controls, and financial record-keeping systems.
- Strong financial acumen, with the ability to read and understand budgets, balance sheets, profit and loss statements, cash flow reports and tax filings.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, accountants, and auditors to meet all financial reporting obligations.
- Demonstrated integrity, discretion, and sound judgment in handling confidential and sensitive information, with a commitment to acting in the best interests of the organization.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- A meticulous approach to financial oversight, policy compliance and risk management.
- Ability to manage deadlines effectively.
- Open-minded, inclusive, non-judgmental, and committed to team success.
