Role Overview

Rainbow Railroad is seeking a detail-oriented Finance Support Volunteer to assist the Finance team with administrative and financial recordkeeping tasks, including support with QuickBooks reconciliations.

This role is ideal for someone with experience or interest in accounting, bookkeeping, nonprofit finance, or financial administration. The volunteer will help ensure financial records are accurate, organized, and up to date, supporting the behind-the-scenes infrastructure that allows Rainbow Railroad to continue its work effectively.

  • Helping organize financial records, invoices, receipts, and related documents
  • Flagging discrepancies or missing information for Finance staff review
  • Supporting data entry and cleanup in finance-related systems
  • Maintaining clear and accurate records in line with internal processes
  • Following Rainbow Railroad’s confidentiality and data-protection expectations

Skills and Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience or coursework in accounting, bookkeeping, finance, business administration, or a related field
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks or willingness to learn
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets, financial records, and digital systems
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and ask clarifying questions when needed
  • Respect for confidentiality and sensitive information
  • Commitment to Rainbow Railroad’s mission and values

Preferred Assets

The following are helpful but not required:

  • Prior experience with nonprofit finance or charitable organizations
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Familiarity with reconciliations, invoices, receipts, or expense tracking
  • Experience working with confidential or sensitive administrative information

Confidentiality Requirement

This role may involve access to financial records, donor-related information, invoices, payment details, and other sensitive organizational materials. The volunteer will be required to complete onboarding and sign Rainbow Railroad’s volunteer confidentiality agreement before beginning the role.

What Volunteers Will Gain

This volunteer will gain:

  • Practical experience supporting nonprofit finance operations
  • Exposure to QuickBooks reconciliation processes
  • Experience working with financial documentation and administrative systems
  • Insight into the operational infrastructure behind a global LGBTQI+ refugee-support organization
  • The opportunity to contribute skills in support of Rainbow Railroad’s mission
