Contract Grant Writer

The Contract Grant Writer serves as an integral member of the Philanthropy Team. Reporting to the Philanthropy Manager, Legacy and Major Gifts, this role is responsible for researching, writing, coordinating, and managing grant proposals and reports that secure funding from foundations, corporations, community organizations, and government agencies.

The successful candidate is an exceptional writer and storyteller with strong research, project management, and organizational skills. You are able to translate program outcomes, data, and impact into compelling funding proposals while managing multiple deadlines and maintaining strong relationships with foundation stakeholders.

Please note this is a one-year part-time (15 hours per week) position.

Responsibilities

  • Research and identify prospective foundation, corporate, community, and government funding opportunities that align with Variety's mission and strategic priorities.
  • Prepare compelling grant applications, letters of inquiry, sponsorship proposals, and other funding requests.
  • Coordinate the collection of program information, budgets, statistics, impact stories, and supporting documentation required for grant submissions.
  • Develop persuasive cases for support that effectively communicate Variety's impact across its programs and services.
  • Maintain and manage the organization's grants calendar, ensuring all submissions, reporting requirements, and renewal opportunities are completed on schedule.
  • Prepare timely interim and final grant reports that demonstrate measurable outcomes and responsible stewardship of donor investments.
  • Collaborate closely with the Philanthropy and Programs team to gather information and ensure the accuracy of all submissions.
  • Maintain accurate grant records, proposal tracking, and reporting within Raiser’s Edge.
  • Assist with the development of fundraising materials, impact reports, donor communications, and other written content as required.
  • Support the Philanthropy Team with strategic fundraising initiatives and special projects as requested.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, English, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of grant writing or institutional fundraising experience with a demonstrated record of securing grants.
  • Exceptional written communication, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong research and analytical abilities with experience interpreting data and program outcomes.
  • Excellent project management, planning, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience using Raiser’s Edge or another donor database is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian charitable sector and institutional fundraising practices is preferred.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while contributing as part of a collaborative team.

Contract Details

  • Contract position (one-year term, with possibility of extension based on organizational needs and performance.)
  • Flexible work schedule with hybrid work available (minimum one day per week in the Burnaby office).
