Become a Braille Volunteer!

“Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.” Helen Keller Only 5% of published information is available in braille.

Sighted volunteers can help change that! Learn to transcribe print into braille, the tactile reading medium for those visually impaired people who cannot read print.

How do I learn?

• CNIB offers an 8-month intensive, contracted transcription course (at no cost) for volunteers who can make the time commitment.

• Classes are held Tuesday mornings from 10am to 12noon, September – April, at the headquarters of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, 1929 Bayview Ave, Toronto (just north of Eglinton Ave.), or by Zoom as/when necessary, due to inclement weather.

• Homework assignments from each week’s class require about two hours a day to complete (approximately 15 hours a week).

What do I need?

• Love of words and excellent English language skills

• Comfortable working with a computer

• Access to a Windows PC computer; a printer and an email address

• The ability to make the requisite time commitment Is this right for me? Yes, if you are …

• Passionate about literacy and on-going learning

• Self-motivated, organized, dedicated and looking to be part of a team

• Able to make a continued volunteer commitment – at least three years which includes a weekly shift (10am-3pm) at CNIB’s Braille Room

• Dedicated to smashing barriers for accessibility!
