The Essential Skills Instructor designs curriculum and teaches all subjects from foundational literacy through to post-secondary preparation, empowering adults as they transition into employment or higher education, or as they navigate daily life with confidence.

Key Responsibilities:

Instruction and Curriculum Development :

  • Provide comprehensive one-to-one instruction to students in a multi-level in-person classroom and virtual learning environment (teaching math, reading, writing, and all related subjects applicable to the grade 12 equivalency test (CAEC), Post Secondary entry, and employment.
    • Develop lesson plans, learning paths, and schedules to meet students' needs.
    • Manage the classroom and adapt delivery methods and learning materials to meet students' diverse needs.
    • Create, curate, understand and manage learning resources and materials, including digitization and collation, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.

Assessment, Feedback and Reporting:

  • Assess students to identify skill gaps and monitor progress using various methods, including observation and informal and formal assessment and provide instructional feedback.
    • Maintain learning plans, monitor learning activities, and report to the Learning Coordinator on goal changes, learning barriers, progress, and resources used.
    • Maintain accurate digital records of student progress and achievements, and report them to the team.
    • Maintain the program data-tracking sheet for funder reporting and statistical analysis.
    • Gather student feedback for reporting and continuous improvement.

Student Support and Motivation:

  • Be compassionate, understanding, and patient, and promote a culture of continuous learning by creating an engaging learning environment that fosters motivation, accountability, confidence, skills acquisition, and retention.
    • Offer support for and provide wraparound community referrals to support other needs.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with staff members and community partners to ensure student support.
  • Participate in and initiate professional development activities
  • Engage in community awareness, support organization events and fundraising activities.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Adult Education, Training, Teaching or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience teaching adults, curriculum development and delivery or a similar role.
  • Advanced teaching skills in English and Mathematics (Foundations to Grade 12 equivalent) and other subjects related to Grade 12 equivalency, Post-Secondary entry and employment)
  • Experienced with diverse learners, varied learning styles, and learner-centred approaches.
  • Skilled in instructing multi-level, blended learning environments using various methods.
  • Experience teaching a variety of student success skills to adult learners, including active listening, critical thinking, personal management, study, test-taking, and communication.
  • Skilled in MS 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint), Google, Zoom, Adobe, and various LMS platforms.
  • Proven ability to compile, track, and report program data accurately.
  • Maintains ethical student/colleague relationships with strong conflict resolution and judgment.
  • Demonstrated skills in instruction, communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a flexible, fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of OALCF, EOIS-CaMS, and Employment Ontario systems, alongside adult learning principles and evaluation techniques.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have regular access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.
