Finance Subject Matter Expert (SME)

BC Municipal Safety Association (BCMSA)

The BC Municipal Safety Association is seeking a qualified Finance Subject Matter Expert to serve as a volunteer member of its Board of Directors and Finance Committee. This opportunity is suited to an experienced finance professional who is committed to effective governance, accountability, and supporting safer and healthier workplaces across British Columbia’s local government sector.

About the Role

Serving as a BCMSA Board Director is a meaningful leadership commitment that supports the effective governance of the organization and helps advance its mission, strategic direction, and accountability to members.

The Finance Subject Matter Expert will provide financial insight and governance-level advice to support the Board of Directors in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities. This individual will also serve on the BCMSA Finance Committee.

This is a two-year volunteer term.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a Chartered Professional Accountant CPA with nonprofit financial leadership or governance experience. Experience in the municipal, local government, public sector, or broader public sector would be considered a strong asset.

The successful candidate will bring sound judgment, professionalism, and a commitment to responsible stewardship, transparency, and collaborative leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate should bring:

  • CPA designation in good standing
  • Nonprofit financial leadership or governance experience
  • Experience with budgets, financial statements, audit processes, risk management, and financial policy oversight
  • Understanding of board governance and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Municipal, local government, public sector, or broader public sector experience, preferred
  • Commitment to BCMSA’s mandate and service to local government workplaces

Volunteer Role and Supported Participation

This is a volunteer position, and BCMSA recognizes that the most valuable contribution a Director makes is their time, expertise, and leadership.

To support participation, BCMSA covers reasonable costs associated with attending required inperson meetings and events, in accordance with applicable policies.

Attendance Expectations

Board meetings, membership meetings, and conference activities are generally expected to be attended in person, subject to approved exceptions.

Finance Committee meetings may be held virtually.
