The John Howard Society of Niagara is seeking three volunteer board members to join our 

Board of Directors Members at Large. 

About Us:
Founded in 1949, the John Howard Society of Niagara (JHSoN) is a non-profit organization 

dedicated to preventing crime and supporting people affected by the justice system. 

We offer programs focused on rehabilitation, reintegration, reducing recidivism and promote

safer communities. 

As an Affiliate of John Howard Society of Ontario and 19 provincial offices, we operate

out of St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls, and Fort Erie with a team of 65 staff.

We’re proud to be a Living Wage Champion and are funded by various federal, provincial 

and municipal partners and private donations.

Previous governance experience will be considered a strong asset.

Commitment
Board members serve a 2-year term, with eligibility for re-appointment for additional terms. 

As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the

board is responsible for:

 Leading on diversity: provide leadership on diversity for the organization 

 Ensuring strong financial stewardship: faithfully read and understand the organization’s

 financial statements and board materials in advance of meetings

 Executive Performance: selecting, supporting, and evaluating the performance of the

 The Board meets 9 times per year with breaks over the summer. Approximate time 

 commitment is 2-3 hours per month and attendance at the Annual General Meeting

The Young Caregivers Association 
 Established in 2003, the Young Caregivers Association (YCA) has transformed the lives of 
young caregivers, the unseen population of family caregivers. We’re the first organization and 
registered charity in Canada dedicated to supporting young caregivers and their families who 
live in rural and urban communities, while building awareness across Canada. 
 
Young caregivers are children, youth, and young adults ages 5 to 25 who provide care for a 
family member due to a chronic illness, disability, mental health concern, substance misuse, or 
socioeconomic factor (e.g., a language barrier). Young caregivers help their family members in 
various ways by caring for their siblings or providing personal, emotional, or financial support. 
 
We collaborate with community partners to bring specialized programs and expertise to 
professionals and organizations across Canada, giving them the tools they need to positively 
impact children, youth and young adults. 
 
Looking Forward 
Our vision is to see young caregivers and their families recognized, supported, and empowered 
in Ontario so they are all able to achieve their full potential. 
 
 
YCA is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for volunteer Board Members 
to support the strategic oversight of operations while focusing on sustainability, expansion, and 
excellence. The successful candidate is elected for a three-year term. It is expected that Board 
Members will attend regular board meetings and sit on at least one Board committee. Board 
meetings take place monthly in the evening and are held in person and through Zoom. 
Attendance at committee meetings is required. A typical month requires about 10 hours of time.
