Unpaid Volunteer Position

Role Description

Spend your summer enjoying beautiful Stanley Park whilst sharing your passion for ecology with others. EcoRangers work in pairs as roving naturalists in the Park, answering visitors’ questions about local ecology and providing other important on-the-spot interpretation. Receive training from experts on Stanley Park’s wildlife, plants and natural history, and develop your skills in interpretation and public engagement.

Duties

  • In pairs, follow set walking routes through Stanley Park and educate park visitors about its natural and cultural history;
  • Set up and operate outdoor interpretation stations to educate visitors about a particular species or ecosystem;
  • Provide directions and answer questions from park visitors;
  • Returning volunteers, or those with equivalent experience, will be encouraged to act as mentors for volunteers that are new to the program.

Time Commitment

Volunteers are expected to:

  • Commit to four 3.5 hour shifts each month throughout July and August
  • Attend mandatory volunteer orientation on June 27th (see “Training” for more details)
  • Participate in at minimum two skill development sessions, offered for volunteers throughout July and August.

We recognize that volunteers have varying schedules and commitments. While we strongly encourage meeting the full participation requirements to get the most out of the program, we are able to work with individuals on a case-by-case basis where needed.

Training

EcoRanger volunteers are required to attend orientation on Saturday, June 27th from 10am-5pm.

We understand that attendance may not be possible for everyone. However, orientation is a foundational part of the program, and we strongly encourage all volunteers to attend in person if at all possible. If you are unable to attend, note it on your application so we can discuss potential alternatives.

Throughout July and August, volunteers will also have opportunities to participate in ongoing skill development sessions covering topics such as the ecology and natural history of Stanley Park, interpretation techniques, and more. As part of the role, EcoRangers are expected to attend at least two of these sessions over the summer. Further details will be provided during orientation.

Requirements

  • Have a passion for ecology;
  • Be interested in public outreach and enjoy meeting and interacting with people in an engaging way;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills;
  • Have a passionate, enthusiastic, and confident nature;
  • High commitment level and reliable team player;
  • Be able to reliably sign up for shifts by the beginning of each month
  • Have a keen interest in nature and in Stanley Park – you do not need to know everything, just be willing to learn!
  • Willingness to be active outdoors, standing and walking for 3.5 hour shifts, in all weather conditions;
  • 16 years of age or older.

Benefits

  • Gain valuable hands-on experience in public outreach, nature interpretation and environmental education skills;
  • Learn about the ecology of Stanley Park;
  • Support visitors to the Park to connect with nature;
  • Spend the summer in Stanley Park, volunteering with like-minded people in a fun environment;
  • Reference letter available after 25 hours of volunteer service;
  • Attend the summer volunteer appreciation event;
  • Access the benefits available to all Stanley Park Ecology volunteers including discounted memberships.
