The Role
Joining our Client Advisory Services team as a Fractional Director of Finance, you will partner directly with executive leaders and board members across the social purpose sector to ground, simplify and drive financial strategies that reflect their mission priorities. You will bring sharp technical accounting expertise, clear communication, data-driven financial judgment, and a patient, solutions-oriented mindset to every client account - owning core financial programs like effective budgeting, payroll validation, audit preparation, and fund tracking. This role offers the perfect balance of high-level advisory and hands-on operational leadership - allowing you to directly support, educate and empower purpose-led organizations while focusing your expertise on client success rather than administrative overhead.
Your focus of responsibilities will be:
Domain: Own the month-end and year-end financial reporting cycles from end to end. Prepare and review critical journal entries, including depreciation, deferred revenue, and adjusting entries. Oversee accurate revenue recognition, such as grants, and capital contributions. Leverage cloud-based accounting software to ensure clear financial transparency.
Client: Act as the primary financial contact and trusted strategic advisor to client Executive Directors and CEOs. Translate key financial packages into clear, actionable insights. Guide clients smoothly through the annual external audit process and present financial information confidently to engaged Boards of Directors.
People: Guide, support, and mentor dedicated internal Bookkeepers within your portfolio. Review transactional data entry, accounts payable (A/P), and invoicing for accuracy. Provide proactive guidance on fund accounting rules and transactions to ensure all client ledgers remain clean and completely audit-ready.
Company: Bring precision, rigor, and compliance to client payroll processing . Identify opportunities to implement modern accounting tech and workflows. Champion consistent, objective decision-making standards that protect the financial health of our clients and the reputation of CHARITYacCOUNTS!.
Your Onboarding Roadmap
We are committed to delivering a focused and supportive onboarding experience that creates a strong foundation for your success, allowing you to hit the ground running:
In your first 30 days: You will get up to speed on CHARITYacCOUNTS! methodologies, standard non-profit and charitable accounting frameworks, and client cloud tools. You will establish relationships with your dedicated bookkeepers and the specific executive leaders in your portfolio while co-managing your first monthly cycles.
In your first 60 days: You will be fully owning your client portfolio end-to-end with high autonomy. You will confidently manage monthly reviews, validate payroll streams, oversee bookkeeper workflows, present financial updates directly to client boards, and anchor year-end audit preparations.
Qualifications
- Professional Designation: Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA/CA from CPA Canada) is highly preferred
- Sector Expertise: Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including audit or assurance experience, working as a Controller, Director/Manager of Finance, or Auditor within the non-profit, foundation, or charitable sectors.
- Technical Mastery: Strong, demonstrable knowledge of Canadian non-profit accounting standards (ASNPO), including deferred revenue, restricted funds, grant matching, and capital contributions.
- Tech Stack: High proficiency using accounting software, advanced Microsoft Excel functions, and Canadian payroll platforms (Ceridian is an asset)
- Communication: Exceptional client relationship and listening abilities to identify unique client needs, brainstorm structural solutions, and present to sophisticated board audiences.
