Community Share Food Bank (CSFB) is seeking someone with a commitment to our mission and vision to fill the role of Chair on our Board of Directors. CSFB is a registered charity that supports the essential and emergency food needs of our neighbours in the Don Mills community. We work to increase access to healthy food for individuals and families through programming and services, building partnerships, and raising awareness on the issue of poverty within our region.

Role Summary

CSFB is seeking a Board Chair to provide governance leadership and guide the work of the Board of Directors. The Board Chair ensures strong governance and accountability, and supports the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability. The Chair ensures the Board functions effectively by guiding discussions, facilitating decisions, and maintaining clear governance processes. They work closely with the Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and support collaboration among board committees.

The Chair is an officer of the Board and is elected by the Board from among its directors.

Key Responsibilities

Board Leadership & Governance

  • Set meeting agendas and ensure follow-up on Board decisions (working with the Secretary).
  • Facilitate motions, votes, and in-camera discussions in accordance with bylaws.
  • Ensure the Board meets its fiduciary, legal, and governance responsibilities (working with the Treasurer where applicable).
  • Support Board recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and succession planning.

Strategic Leadership

  • Help guide strategic priorities and monitor progress toward goals.
  • Ensure decisions align with the organization’s mission, vision and values.
  • Ensure activities are aligned with the Strategic Plan.

Organizational Leadership & Board Coordination

  • Appoint and support committee chairs and ensure committees have clear mandates and accountability.
  • Act as an ambassador for the organization with partners, funders, and community stakeholders.
  • Support fundraising and donor stewardship alongside other Board members.
  • Provide support during leadership, staffing, or Board transitions.
  • Support onboarding and handover to a new Chair when stepping out of the role.

Time Commitment and Term

  • Approximately 10-15 hours per month.
  • Includes Board meetings and preparation, committee coordination, governance planning and communication, and participation in Board committee work.
  • Additional time may be required during leadership transitions or recruitment periods.

The Board Chair serves a two-year term, renewable. Interim or transition terms may be shorter depending on organizational needs.

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in or commitment to issues related to food security, community wellbeing, or social impact and alignment with the mission and values of Community Share Food Bank.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to guide discussions and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
  • Collaborative leadership style.
  • Transparent, tactful, and compassionate communication approach.
  • Comfort balancing governance oversight with strategic leadership.
  • Preferred: About 5 years of relevant leadership, governance, or management experience (flexible depending on candidate background).
  • Experience working with a nonprofit board or governance body is an asset but not required.

We encourage anyone with lived experience of food insecurity to apply.
