Who are we? 

Food is not the solution to food insecurity, but people need support today. Knowing this, 
we collect and distribute more than three million kilograms of food annually to 139-
member food banks, meal programs, and shelters across the province. This equates to 
over $1 million worth of food each month. We also support member agencies as they build 
capacity to serve their communities, and partner with communities across Nova Scotia to 
explore innovative new solutions to food insecurity. While we help Nova Scotians meet a 
very basic need, we're raising awareness of the root causes of food insecurity - things like 
systemic racism, low wages, inadequate income support, and unaffordable housing. We 
believe all Nova Scotians deserve just, dignified, and secure access to food, and no one 
should have to rely on charity to meet their most basic needs. 

What is a Manager of Philanthropy and Engagement? 

The Manager, Philanthropy and Engagement is a relationship-focused leader responsible 
for advancing Feed Nova Scotia’s mission through innovative fundraising and 
communications initiatives. This role oversees a dynamic team, ensuring the successful 
execution of individual giving programs, donor stewardship strategies, fundraising events, 
public relations, and external communications. With a strong understanding of the 
nonprofit landscape and donor engagement best practices, the Manager plays a vital 
leadership role, contributing to organizational planning and impact. 
 
This role is ideal for an experienced fundraising professional who is values-driven, highly 
collaborative, and committed to fostering a positive, equitable workplace culture. 

What does the Manager of Philanthropy and Engagement do? 

Key Responsibilities 

Philanthropy &amp; Fund Development 

 • Manage a portfolio of Major Donors and prospects, leveraging platforms like 
CanadaHelps.org to track and deepen engagement. 

 • Use data and analytics to inform strategy, evaluate donor retention, track ROI, and 
report on performance. 

 • Ensure compliance with CRA guidelines for charitable receipting and donor 
recognition. 


 • Attend and support the events staff where needed to ensure the planning and 
execution of complex community events and major corporate campaigns are 
running in good standing. 

 • Stay informed on fundraising trends and emerging best practices in the non-for-
profit sector. 

Major Donor Relationship Management 

 • Build, manage, and steward relationships with Major Donors through tours, 
presentations, events, and personalized communications. 

 • Coordinate Major Donor acknowledgments, stewardship plans, and impact 
reporting to strengthen engagement and recognition. 

 • Collaborate with administrative staff to resolve donor concerns and escalate issues 
where needed. 

Engagement &amp; Communications 

 • Manages message and story development, including videos (i.e. identifies first voice 
stories, schedules and conducts interviews, supports editing and production 
process) 

 • Develop the Annual Social Media Plan along with managing the day-to-day activity 
 • Ensures a consistent visual identity across the organization 
 • Manages communication projects, from concept to production 
 • Ensure strong alignment between fund development and communications 

strategies to maximize donor and public engagement. 

Leadership &amp; Supervision 

 • Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance management for the Philanthropy 
and Engagement team. 

 • Keep the Director of Philanthropy and Engagement informed of key opportunities, 
challenges, and risks requiring attention. 

 • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven culture that reflects Feed Nova 
Scotia’s values and priorities. 

Working Conditions 

This role operates in a dynamic, community-focused environment. Occasional evening and 
weekend work is required for events and initiatives. Flexible work arrangements, including

What are we looking for? 

Qualifications 

 • Post-secondary education in Fundraising, Communications, Public Relations, 
Nonprofit Management, or a related field considered an asset. 

 • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in fundraising and/or communications, 
with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role. 

 • Demonstrated experience in donor stewardship, campaign development, and 
revenue generation. 

 • Strong understanding of donor databases (e.g., Raiser’s Edge, DonorPerfect) and 
digital engagement tools (e.g., CanadaHelps.org, Benevity) is an asset. 

 • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and deliver measurable results. 
 • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proposal and impact 

report writing. 
 • Knowledge of CRA charitable giving regulations and donor recognition standards.

Compensation 

The annual salary range for this position is $83,193-97,874, paid out on a biweekly basis. 
Our employee compensation package includes three weeks of paid vacation, fifteen

Insurance Program and an employer contributed RRSP program.

This posi8on is part of a small development team which includes Coordinators of Donor Rela8ons, Events, 
Database and a Senior Advisor of Legacy Crea8on. You will work closely with the Director of Philanthropy and

 • Manage porZolio of approximately 200-250 donors and prospects at levels of $1000+

 • Experience with moves management prac8ces and demonstrated understanding of the different stages 

and strategies of donor/client engagement 
 • Proven experience developing strong working rela8onships with senior leaders, partners and donors 
 • Excep8onal interpersonal and communica8on skills, both oral and wriLen

 • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to inform the creation of effective donor 

communications, outreach and engagement materials. 
 • Provide mentoring and support for other staff regarding relationship management and linking 

donors with other aspects of the Nature Trust’s work including volunteerism and conservation. 
 • Work with external organizations and professionals to develop specialized knowledge and skills 

important for Nature Trust fundraising efforts 
 • Assist with developing annual fundraising plans

Required Qualifications and Experience 
 • Post-secondary degree in relevant field or a combination of post-secondary education with 

fundraising / sales experience 
 • At least 5 years of direct fundraising or sales experience with demonstrated success 
 • Experience with moves management practices and demonstrated understanding of the different 

stages of donor/client engagement from one-time gifts to legacy giving 
 • Proven experience developing strong working relationships with senior leaders, partners and 

donors 
 • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. 
 • Proven personal management skills, including the ability to establish plans, meet deadlines, track 

follow-ups and provide regular status reports 
 • Recognized as a committed team player who recognizes the power of collaboration to generate 

success. 
 • Strong understanding of CRA rules and regulations as they pertain to fundraising 
 • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and CRM software such as Donor Perfect, Blackbaud NXT, Sales 

Force or similar 
 • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel periodically within Nova Scotia for personal donor visits 

and activities. 
 

Additional Skills and Knowledge Desired: 
 • Experience working in a complex multi-stakeholder environment 
 • Working knowledge of charitable giving options such as insurance gifts, stock transfers, tax law and 

legacy giving mechanisms 
 • CFRE designation or equivalent 
 • A deep personal interest in protecting nature and the environment. 
 • Solid knowledge of Nova Scotia’s unique areas, communities and geography

Working Conditions 
The Nature Trust team works in a hybrid office environment with the physical office located in downtown 
Dartmouth. Staff have the op8on to define their regular workplace as primarily office- or home-based. This 
posi8on will be expected to aLend periodic mee8ngs in person at the office, to ensure regular interac8on 
and communica8on with other staff members, and to regularly meet with donors and prospects in person, 
which entails travel throughout the province. Occasionally there will be required events and ac8vi8es 
outside of regular working hours. 
 
Additional Notes: 
This position is part of a growing Philanthropy &amp; Engagement Team who are positioned to expand the 
organization’s base of major donor support for future sustainability. This position will work closely with 
the Senior Advisor, Legacy Creation to transition many existing donor relationships to the new position 
and will be a vital part of the team who will develop new major gift relationships in support of the latest 
strategic priorities.
