Make a Difference Through Meaningful Connection

Mishka Social Services is seeking compassionate and dependable volunteers to participate in our Friendly Visiting Program for seniors living in long-term care and retirement homes across the Niagara Region.

Many older adults experience loneliness and social isolation. By spending time with a senior through conversation and companionship, you can make a meaningful impact on their well-being and brighten their day.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Visit seniors at designated long-term care or retirement homes.
  • Engage in friendly conversation and active listening.
  • Participate in activities such as board games, puzzles, reading, arts and crafts, or walks (where permitted).
  • Help create a welcoming and enjoyable social environment.
  • Treat all residents with dignity, respect, and compassion.
  • Follow the policies and procedures of both Mishka Social Services and the care home.

Qualifications

  • Friendly, patient, and compassionate.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Reliable and committed to scheduled visits.
  • Experience working with seniors is an asset but not required.
  • Must be able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check (or be willing to obtain one if required).

What You'll Gain

  • Meaningful volunteer experience supporting older adults.
  • Opportunities to build communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Volunteer reference letter after meeting program requirements.
  • Community service hours (if applicable).
  • The chance to make a lasting difference in someone's life through companionship.

Training & Support

Volunteers will receive an orientation and ongoing support from the Mishka Social Services team before beginning their placement.
