Position Summary 

 
Funded by the Ontario Black Youth Action Plan, the Student Family Advocate (SFA) will design, 

develop and deliver highly targeted, community-based and culturally relevant advocacy supports 

tailored to the needs of Black students and their families. The SFA will provide advocacy supports and 

1 on 1 Case Management, social programming, and community education sessions benefitting Black 

youth ages 13-25 and their families, including newcomers and those experiencing poverty, in Toronto’s 

York South-Weston and Oakwood-Vaughan communities. The long-term goals of the SFA program are 

to: 


1. Create conditions for Black student success: Black students, families and communities have 
positive and collaborative relationships with schools/education systems. Schools/education 
systems are informed by and responsive to the needs of Black students, families and 
communities, and identify and address systemic barriers to their achievement, equity and 
well-being. 

2. Address outcomes disparities: Black students are better supported and see increases in 
educational achievement and attainment/retention, including successful transitions. 

 
This will be done by carrying out the following objectives: improving the experience of Black high 
school aged youth, and Black youth transitioning into postsecondary education and connecting youth 
to specialized services (including employment support, legal support, and educational support). 
 

Main Tasks &amp; Responsibilities 

 
Program Coordination 

â Contribute to the development and maintenance of program logic models and implementation 

plans to achieve the goals of the SFA program with an understanding of the barriers youth face 

and their evolving needs 

â Develop and facilitate group programs and educational workshops for youth, 

families/caregivers, community members and educators committed to enhancing Black 

student success 

â Support FYI colleagues to supervise drop-in activities, programs and events to connect with

â Collaborate with the Youth Outreach Worker to develop and conduct outreach in the

Case Management 

â Work collaboratively with all program staff to develop effective service delivery plans that

â Manage a caseload of 30-40 active youth clients and provide periodic one-on-one sessions that 

focus on developing and achieving client goals 


Administrative Duties 

â Collect the necessary documentation required in serving newcomer clients 

â Maintain comprehensive client files and case notes utilizing FYI’s database system, tools and 

procedures 

â Support training and on-boarding of program support staff 

â Provide periodic reporting updates to supervisor through Progress Update meetings and via 

Monthly Reports 

â Document work with youth and partners using organizational database 

â Support the evaluation of the program by conducting interviews, focus groups, surveys, and 

other data collection methods as needed

Required Experience (2 years minimum): 
Education: 

The minimum level of education required is a community college diploma in human services and 

social studies related education (e.g. social work, child and youth worker, community work, 

psychology, etc).

â Coordinating services in community centres and/or in different program spaces 

â Developing and maintaining organizational partnerships

employment.</li><li>Performs other relevant duties as assigned.</li></ul>Job Seeker Support<ul><li>Maintains up-to-date knowledge of clients’ job search goals, continuously developing job opportunities that meet clients’ skills, interests, and needs on the caseload.</li><li>Meets with clients to understand their abilities and accommodations required to ensure client-centered job matching and job carving.</li><li>Provides coaching and support to help job seeker clients overcome barriers to employment.</li><li>Supports job retention goals by monitoring clients’ employment progress and providing post-employment advice and support as needed.</li><li>Follows up with each placed client regularly for up to 12 months, ensuring pay stubs or other documented evidence are on file to demonstrate continued employment.</li><li>Delivers workshops or group orientation on employer or industry needs and prepares clients for hiring events with employers.</li><li>Arranges networking and industry guest speaking sessions where clients can learn more about different industries.</li><li>Guides job development activities for job seekers and employers to promote long-term job retention.</li><li>Utilizes systems and technologies provided by The Career Foundation to further support clients with achieving successful outcomes.</li><li>Performs other relevant duties as assigned.</li></ul>Qualifications/ Skills Required:<ul><li>Post-secondary degree or diploma in sales, marketing, human services, or another related field relevant to the duties of the position is highly preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.</li><li>Minimum of 2 years of direct experience in job development, community outreach, job carving, business development, sales, recruitment, or other experience directly transferable to the core deliverables of the position is required.</li><li>Demonstrated track record in a results-driven environment with experience meeting targets is required.</li><li>Previous experience with developing relationships with employers, familiarity with Employment Ontario programming, and working with clients from various social, cultural, and economic backgrounds are considered strong assets.</li><li>Valid Ontario G driver’s licence and reliable vehicle to conduct essential and frequent work-related travel within the communities served.</li><li>Candidates who possess an existing network of employers that could be relied upon to provide employment opportunities for job seeker clients will be prioritized.</li><li>High emotional intelligence, demonstrating patience, empathy, and connectivity when working with clients of various experiences, needs, and abilities.</li><li>Knowledge of current labour market trends, job search techniques, and employment research methods is considered an asset.</li><li>Excellent verbal and written English communication skills. Bilingualism in a second language considered an asset.</li><li>A professional and courteous approach to client service with a high level of respect for the diversity of the people served.</li><li>Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to uphold the organization’s service standards, policies, and core values.</li><li>Ability to maintain sensitive information and exhibit tact, diplomacy, and good judgment, with high standards of ethics and confidentiality.</li><li>Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Outlook 365 applications, including Teams and SharePoint.
