Location: Metlakatla, BC - Onsite

Reporting to: Manager of Education

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Heath, Director of Recreation and Director of Culture Language and Heritage, the Youth Support Worker (YSW) provides individualized support to youth by focusing on life skills development and wellness planning through trauma-informed and harm reduction approaches. This role involves working with youth in both individual and group living settings to foster independence, healthy habits, and personal growth. The YSW collaborates with social workers, community partners, and Metlakatla First Nation departments to ensure youth have access to essential services, cultural support, and treatment programs. There is a requirement to travel between Prince Rupert, Metlakatla, and local schools, with regular reporting to the education department and other external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized support to youth, including the development and implementation of personalized life skills and wellness plans using a trauma-informed and harm reduction approach
  • Support youth on a one-on-one basis regarding in areas such as personal hygiene, cooking, food security, and maintaining their living spaces
  • Work with youth in both individual and group living situations to foster independence and healthy habits
  • Facilitate life skills programming and workshops tailored to each youth’s individual needs
  • Assist youth with career development, including but not limited to job interview preparation and employment readiness
  • Liaise with social workers to coordinate income assistance, counselling services, and youth agreements
  • Collaborate with RCMP, Ministry representatives, schools, and Metlakatla’s CLH department to address youth-related issues and provide cultural supports
  • Support youth treatment initiatives through prevention, education, and intervention strategies
  • Help create and deliver programs at Safe Place sites and Lighthouses to provide secure and supportive environments
  • Engage with youth across multiple sites including Prince Rupert, Metlakatla, and local schools, which may include travelling to each location
  • Maintain regular communication and reporting with the education department and the Manager of Education regarding youth activities and progress
  • Engage in immediate response and contact relevant management regarding crisis situations, and contacting resources relevant to each unique crisis
  • Participate in meetings with department Managers or Directors to ensure youth access to Metlakatla programs and services
  • Report to the health, recreation, and education departments regarding youth progress
  • Adhere to youth medication schedules and administration
  • Maintain accurate documentation of youth plans, progress, and program participation
  • Advocate for youth and ensure consistent support across all areas of their development
  • Other duties as assigned

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in social work, child & youth care, or a related field
  • 3-4 years of experience working with vulnerable or at-risk youth; a combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Valid Class 4 BC driver’s licensewith a clean driving record
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Food Safe Certificate
  • ASIST and NVCI training
  • Experience working in and with an Indigenous community is preferred

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am-5:00 pm, and Friday from 8:30 am-1:00 pm
