Youth Programs Coordinator Job Description Job title: Youth Programs Coordinator NOC 42201 – Social and community service workers Reporting relationship: This position reports to the Community Programming Coordinator. Hours of work: part-time (approximately 10 hours/week), primarily evenings and/or weekends Contract duration: Temporary until April 1, 2026 with possibility of extension. About Romero House: Romero House is a community of welcome for newly arrived refugee claimants in Toronto. We are a charitable organisation offering transitional housing and immigration and settlement support in the spirit of good neighbours, valuing dignity, mutuality, and care. We are a diverse community where all are welcome. Romero House is unique in that we are not only a housing and settlement service provider but an intentional community (some of our staff and volunteers live in our housing) very connected to our neighbourhood and each other. Job purpose: The Youth Programs Coordinator plans, facilitates and coordinates regular youth programming for kids and once for teens. They create a safe and inclusive space for youth to connect with other young people in the community and participate in engaging activities. They coordinate a team of volunteers to support, and sometimes lead, programming. Duties and Responsibilities: Program Preparation and Facilitation
â Organize, lead, and promote interest in weekly youth activities (once a week children, once a week teens), such as arts, crafts, sports, games, homework help, reading groups, etc.
â Determine time, costs, resources, or materials needed for an activity â Assess the needs and interests of individuals and groups and plan activities
accordingly, given the available space and resources â Purchase materials needed for activities, submit receipts to bookkeeper â Ensure that there is a healthy snack at every session by purchasing one or
assigning a volunteer to do so â With the support of volunteers, prep and clean the space for half an hour before
and after sessions (i.e. arrive at 4pm for kids programming in order to prep and start for 4:30)
â Take youth on monthly excursions in the city
Coordination and Collaboration â Supervise and coordinate the work activities of volunteers, such as training and
onboarding volunteers and organizing a volunteer schedule â Develop constructive, supportive and cooperative working relationships with
volunteers and maintain them over time â Discuss with volunteers after each session what worked, what didn’t work, and
improvements to make Outreach and Communication
â Communicate with families over Whatsapp and face-to-face to promote interest in activities, determine participant numbers and inform families of what to bring
â Create or request promotional poster on Canva for programming and distribute to families
â Translating or explaining instructions and ensuring all participants understand the activity and are included
â Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other participants, explaining rules, and encouraging participation
â Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience Safety
â Create a general waiver for participation in programs, distribute, and collect signed waivers from parents
â Create waivers for excursions or higher-risk activities, distribute, and collect signed waivers from parents
â Ensure that there is an appropriate ratio of adults to youth at all times during programming
â Follow Romero House policies and procedures Program Administration and Record Keeping
â Maintain program records as pertaining to volunteers, participants and activities â Enter, record, store, or maintain information in written or electronic form
Qualifications and Qualities (Required)
â Proficiency in English â Proficiency with digital technologies â Experience working with children and youth as an employee, placement student,
or volunteer OR experience in relevant educational programs such as social work, social service work, child and youth care, or psychology
â Ability to manage multiple responsibilities independently and as part of a team â Ability to lead, offer opinions and direction, and to get members of a group to
work together to accomplish tasks â Takes initiative â Ability to troubleshoot problems as they arise â Experience handling complaints, resolving grievances and conflicts, and bringing
others together to try to reconcile differences
â Self awareness with respect to power, privilege, and prejudice and tools to promote equity and inclusion
â A sense of shared humanity and desire to contribute to a more just, caring, and sustainable world
Assets (Helpful but not required)
â Proficiency in other languages, in particular Spanish, Persian, Arabic, Amharic, Ukrainian, Russian, French, Kirundi, or Yoruba
â Experience working in diverse communities â Experience working well as part of a team â Ability to build relationships across diverse cultural backgrounds â Adaptability and creativity in a dynamic, community-centered environment â Experience living at Romero House or being part of the Romero House
community â Ability to perform general physical activities includes doing activities that require
considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body â Experience with digital translation tools such as Google Translate â First Aid certification

trauma survivors, non-English speaking â Communicating with claimants using digital translation tools â Hybrid work (combination of program facilitation, and remote coordination of
volunteers and preparation of sessions). Program locations near Dundas West subway, Toronto
â Frequent use of email and instant messaging â Coordinate or lead others in accomplishing tasks and goals â Successful candidate must have up to date immunizations as recommended by
