Volunteer Opportunities with R&E Ocean Community Conservation

R&E Ocean Community Conservation is a Canadian registered charity working at the intersection of research, education, community participation, and marine conservation. We collaborate with coastal communities, researchers, and partner organizations to develop practical and locally relevant conservation initiatives.

We are seeking committed volunteers who would like to contribute their professional skills to meaningful marine conservation and community-based work. These are volunteer positions, and most activities can be completed remotely.

Volunteer Web & UI Designer

Position Overview

The Volunteer Web & UI Designer will help improve R&E Ocean Community Conservation’s digital presence by adapting existing website designs, developing new pages, and ensuring that our online content is visually engaging, accessible, and easy to navigate across different devices.

The volunteer will collaborate with the development, communications, and content teams to translate project information into clear and effective digital experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Adapt existing desktop webpage designs into responsive, user-friendly mobile layouts.
  • Create new webpages and page sections for R&E’s programs, projects, campaigns, and resources.
  • Work with Figma components, auto-layout, design libraries, and interactive elements.
  • Maintain visual consistency across webpages and digital materials.
  • Organize information and content using clear visual hierarchy and intuitive navigation.
  • Prepare and export optimized visual assets for the web development team.
  • Collaborate with content writers and communications volunteers to present information effectively.
  • Clearly document designs and provide organized files and specifications to developers.
  • Review implemented webpages and recommend design or usability improvements.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency in Figma, including components, auto-layout, prototyping, and design systems.
  • Experience in web design, UI design, or digital product design.
  • Understanding of responsive and mobile-first design.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS layout constraints to ensure designs are technically feasible.
  • Basic copywriting or website content-editing skills.
  • Ability to prepare and organize assets for developer handoff.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and visual consistency.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience working with nonprofit, environmental, scientific, or community organizations is an asset.
