Unpaid Volunteer Position

Community Share Food Bank (CSFB) is seeking someone with a commitment to our mission and vision to fill the role of Vice-Chair on our Board of Directors. CSFB is a registered charity that supports the essential and emergency food needs of our neighbours in the Don Mills community. We work to increase access to healthy food for individuals and families through programming and services, building partnerships, and raising awareness on the issue of poverty within our region.

Role Summary

The Board Vice-Chair supports the Chair in providing governance leadership. The Vice-Chair shadows the existing Chair to build readiness for the role, contributing to a healthy leadership pipeline and continuity across terms.

The Vice-Chair is an officer of the Board and is elected by the Board from among its directors.

Key Responsibilities

Board Leadership and Governance Support

  • Chair & facilitate Board meetings in the absence of the Chair, ensuring all agenda items and votes comply with bylaws.
  • Support the Chair in preparing meeting agendas, following up on Board decisions, and facilitating inclusive and productive board conversations.
  • Support Board recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and succession planning.
  • Stay closely informed of governance matters to provide continuity and coverage when the Chair is unavailable.

Leadership Pipeline

  • Serve as a 'Chair in waiting,' actively shadowing and preparing for the Chair role.
  • Build relationships with Board members, staff, and key stakeholders to support a seamless future transition.
  • Work with the outgoing Chair and Recruitment Committee to support leadership handovers.

Operational Support (As Needed)

  • Assist with addressing urgent operational issues to ensure continuity of services when required.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 10-15 hours per month.
  • Includes attendance at Board meetings (every other month), preparation, check-ins with the Chair, and participation in Board committee work.
  • Additional time may be required when covering for the Chair or during leadership transitions.

  • Experience with nonprofit governance and/or senior leadership teams.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Collaborative and steady leadership style.
  • Transparent, tactful, and compassionate communication style.
  • Commitment to the organization's mission, vision, and values.
  • Interest in developing toward a Board Chair role.

Term

  • One-year term, renewable.
  • Interim or transition terms may be shorter based on organizational needs.
  • The Vice-Chair is expected to be a candidate for the Board Chair role at the end of their term, subject to Board approval and organizational need.
