Compassionate Ottawa is seeking a volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Directors.

Compassionate Ottawa (compassionateottawa.ca) is a community organization dedicated to helping people live well, die well, and grieve well. Through workshops, conversations, webinars, and community partnerships, we encourage people to support one another during serious illness, caregiving, dying, and grief. Our work is delivered by a small staff team and a dedicated network of trained volunteers, in collaboration with health care, social service, and community partners.

As Treasurer, you will play an important leadership role in supporting the financial stewardship of the organization while working collaboratively with fellow Board members, staff, and our external accounting firm.

Responsibilities

In addition to the general responsibilities of all Board members, the Treasurer will:

  • Provide oversight of the organization's financial management and administration.
  • Review and present regular financial reports to the Board.
  • Work closely with staff, the Executive Committee, and the organization's accounting firm to support sound financial practices.
  • Help ensure the organization meets its financial governance and reporting obligations as a registered charity.
  • Contribute to the Board's strategic planning and financial oversight.

Qualifications

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has a general understanding of financial management and administration (you do not need to be a CPA or accounting professional).
  • Understands, or is interested in learning about, the financial and regulatory responsibilities of charitable and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Is comfortable interpreting financial statements and discussing financial performance.
  • Enjoys working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and fellow Board members.
  • Shares Compassionate Ottawa's commitment to building compassionate communities.

Experience in the not-for-profit sector, board governance, or charitable organizations is considered an asset.

About Our Board

Compassionate Ottawa's Board of Directors provides strategic leadership and oversight for the organization, including financial stewardship, planning, governance, and fund development. Board members serve one-, two-, or three-year terms (renewable to a maximum of six years), meet approximately 10 times per year, and are encouraged to participate in at least one committee or program area. Officers of the Board also serve on the Executive Committee, which meets regularly between Board meetings.

We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and encourage individuals who reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of Ottawa to apply. Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
