The Multicultural International Students Services Society (MISSS) helps international students in Canada thrive through resources, programs, and community support. We run practical programs like Bright Beginnings (onboarding to life in Canada) and Employment Readiness, alongside a successful webinar series. Volunteers are the heart and soul of MISSS; they are central to our growth and the impact we make on the community.
The Opportunity
We’re seeking a strategic and hands-on Volunteer Manager to build and lead our volunteer function. You will be a pillar of our growth, moving beyond simple coordination into organizational leadership. The Volunteer Manager also serves as a non-voting member of the Board, attending monthly meetings and providing regular progress reports.
Role type: Volunteer (manager/leadership level)
Reports to: Senior Manager.
Location: Metro Vancouver Area (primarily remote)
Time commitment: ~5–8 hours/week (flexible)
Term: Minimum 12 months (renewable)
What You’ll Do
Volunteer Coordination
- Pipeline development: Build the volunteer pipeline by creating role descriptions, managing postings, and leading outreach and information sessions.
- Vetting: Manage the end-to-end screening process, including interviews, reference checks, and coordination of Criminal Record Checks.
- Onboarding & Placement: Design and deliver orientations, match volunteers to programs based on skill sets.
- Retention: Develop recognition programs (badges, certificates, spotlights) and feedback loops to ensure volunteer satisfaction.
Organizational Development & People Operations
- Process Design: Draft and refine lightweight Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding confidentiality, conduct, and volunteer safety.
- Systems Management: Maintain a centralized volunteer database to track hours, skills, and consent forms.
- Training & Culture: Facilitate brief workshops for all MISSS volunteers on trauma-informed practice, intercultural sensitivity, and privacy.
- Leadership Coaching: Provide guidance to program team leads on performance feedback and fostering an inclusive culture.
Partnerships & Outreach
- Strategic Growth: Build relationships with universities, newcomer agencies, and cultural groups to expand volunteer pools.
- Digital Presence: Collaborate with the Marketing team to ensure the MISSS volunteer recruitment page on the website and external job boards remain current.
What You Bring
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or Social Sciences
- 2+ years of experience in people coordination, club leadership, or community organizing
- Strong intercultural communication and a student-centered, empathetic approach
- Organized and systems-minded, highly comfortable with Google Workspace
- High discretion when handling personal data and a commitment to upholding privacy standards
