
Volunteer Opportunity: Cahdco Board of Directors
Cahdco is a non-profit affordable housing development organization working across Eastern Ontario to create community driven housing solutions. We leverage our 30 years of affordable housing experience to provide training and learning opportunities to build capacity across the sector nationally. Through partnerships with municipalities, non-profits and private sector stakeholders Cahdco works towards increasing housing supply, providing community solutions and strengthening the development capacity for the affordable housing sector. The affordable housing landscape is experiencing a significant shift, and Cahdco is rising up to meet the moment and ensure that we continue to address community needs.
Cahdco is seeking committed and passionate individuals to join its Board of Directors. As a Board member, you will help guide Cahdco's governance in alignment with our mission and values. The Board is the ultimate authority for all of Cahdco’s activities.
Role & Responsibilities
- Prepare for and actively participate in Board meetings and committee meetings, held approximately every month.
- Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials and contributing informed perspectives.
- Engage in strategic planning sessions and governance discussions.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight of Cahdco’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
- Participate in the development and approval of organizational policies and priorities.
- Monitor organizational performance, financial health, and risk management.
- Advise on and contribute to project and organizational initiatives.
- Advise on appropriate performance indicators aligned with Cahdco’s Organizational Goals.
- Advise on and support the strategic plan and management system implementation based on Organizational Goals.
- Review and approve budgets, financial statements, and audit reports.
- Ensure appropriate financial controls and accountability mechanisms are in place.
- Support Cahdco’s legal decision-making, as needed.
- Support relationship-building with key stakeholders, including municipalities, funders, and partners
- Contribute to identifying funding opportunities, partnerships, and strategic initiatives
- Ensure Cahdco has adequate human resources with the right policies in place, support the hiring of the executive director, and monitor their performance annually.
Skills and Experience
Cahdco welcomes a diverse range of expertise. Priority areas include:
- Affordable housing development, planning, or real estate
- Finance, accounting, or investment
- Legal or governance experience
- Construction, panelized technology, modular housing, or infrastructure development
- Government relations or public policy
- Communications, stakeholder engagement, or fundraising
- Change management and organizational growth planning
Lived experience related to housing insecurity or community advocacy is also highly valued.
Time Commitment
- Board members are appointed for one-year terms, which may be renewed. To ensure board effectiveness it is recommended that Board members stay in their roles for at least three years.
- The Board meets monthly. Meetings are currently held virtually. In-person meetings, when scheduled, take place at Cahdco’s office at 415 Gilmour Street, 2nd floor (wheelchair accessible).
- Board members are required to join committee(s) e.g., The finance and audit committee, strategic planning working group or the joint advisory working group. Committee meetings are held most months without a Board meeting.
- Members should plan time to review the Board package before each meeting. (The package includes all materials to be discussed.)
- Cahdco can cover family care or transportation costs if needed. Just ask!
