Volunteer Opportunity: Board Director - Financial Expertise

The Registered Nurses’ Foundation of Ontario (RNFOO) is seeking a dedicated volunteer with financial expertise to join our Board of Directors. This individual will help strengthen the Board’s financial oversight and support the long-term sustainability of the Foundation as we provide awards and scholarships to Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and nursing students across Ontario.

Purpose of the Role

As a Board Director, you will contribute financial knowledge and perspective to RNFOO’s governance and strategic decision-making. Working alongside the Treasurer, Finance Committee, fellow Board members, and management service providers, you will help ensure the Foundation’s financial resources are managed responsibly and strategically in support of its mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in Board meetings and organizational decision-making
  • Serve as a member of the Finance Committee
  • Review budgets, financial statements, investment reports, audit materials, and other financial information
  • Support the Treasurer and Finance Committee in identifying financial risks, opportunities, and emerging priorities
  • Contribute to discussions regarding financial planning, investments, internal controls, and long-term sustainability
  • Help ensure donor contributions and organizational resources are managed responsibly and in accordance with RNFOO’s mission
  • Promote strong governance, accountability, and responsible stewardship across the organization
  • Act as an ambassador for RNFOO and its work within the nursing and broader community

Commitment

  • Attend and actively participate in Board meetings and a minimum of four Finance Committee meetings annually
  • Review meeting materials in advance and contribute to informed, collaborative decision-making
  • Participate in additional Board or committee activities as required
  • Uphold RNFOO’s values and maintain a strong commitment to ethical governance and accountability
  • Estimated time commitment: approximately 4–6 hours per month

What We’re Looking For

  • Professional experience in finance, accounting, banking, audit, investment management, financial planning, or a related field
  • A CPA, CFA, or other relevant professional designation is an asset but not required
  • Experience with nonprofit finance, charitable organizations, investments, risk management, or board governance is an asset
  • Ability to understand financial information and communicate financial concepts clearly to individuals with varying levels of financial knowledge
  • Sound judgment, integrity, and a collaborative approach to leadership
  • Commitment to RNFOO’s mission of advancing nursing through scholarships, awards, and research support

Experience in nursing or healthcare is considered an asset but is not required.
