Immigrant Women Services Ottawa (IWSO) is looking for peer mentors to connect with participants in the From Survivor to Thriver project. The role of the mentor is to listen, encourage, and provide guidance (when requested).

This volunteer position offers flexible scheduling and an opportunity to make a significant impact. Mentors will also receive training and ongoing support from project staff.

About the Project
From Survivor to Thriver is a new, transformative initiative that supports immigrant and racialized women survivors of violence in their journey toward healing, empowerment, and financial independence. The project helps survivors overcome isolation, develop leadership and employment skills, and achieve greater self-sufficiency through a structured mentoring program, skill-building workshops, and employer connections. The project is being delivered by IWSO in collaboration with World Skills Employment Centre.

Eligibility

To be eligible to volunteer, you must be an immigrant or racialized woman who has experienced gender-based violence. Prospective volunteers must also complete an interview and pass a Vulnerable Sector Check.

Qualifications

  • Good listening skills
  • A desire to empower fellow survivors
  • An ability to provide support in a non-judgemental way
  • Proficiency in multiple languages is an asset

Time Commitment

Volunteers are expected to meet with participants for a period of 3-6 months. Meetings will take place by phone or in person at a time that is convenient for both people.
