Role Type: Volunteer, unpaid (Part‑Time)

Location: Remote

Reports To: People Leader

Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per week (flexible based on availability) for a minimum of 6 months.

Role Summary

The HR Generalist plays a central role in building and maintaining the people infrastructure that supports Solution Community’s mission. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in early‑stage nonprofit environments, understands the nuances of volunteer‑based organizations, and can balance structure with flexibility. The HR Generalist will support core HR functions, including onboarding, volunteer engagement, policy development, compliance, and manager enablement.

Key Responsibilities

HR Operations & Systems

  • Maintain volunteer records, role descriptions, and organizational org charts.
  • Support the development and upkeep of lightweight HR systems (Google Workspace, Click Up, Slack, GitHub, Canva, Dover ATS, etc.).
  • Implement scalable processes that work in a low‑resource, high‑volume volunteer environment.
  • Assist with scheduling, documentation, and internal communications.

Policy & Compliance

  • Draft and update HR policies, volunteer handbooks, and organizational guidelines appropriate for a startup NGO.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit, volunteer, and data‑privacy standards.
  • Support risk‑mitigation practices related to volunteer roles and organizational operations.

Manager & Team Support

  • Provide guidance to volunteer managers on performance, communication, and team dynamics.
  • Support conflict resolution and issue escalation with professionalism and empathy.
  • Help hiring managers implement consistent expectations, feedback loops, and recognition practices.


Culture & Community Building

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission‑driven volunteer culture.
  • -Support recognition programs, community‑building initiatives, and internal events.
  • Promote Solution Community’s values through everyday interactions and HR practices.

Volunteer Onboarding & Engagement Support

  • Support the end‑to‑end onboarding process for new volunteers, ensuring a warm, structured, and mission‑aligned experience.
  • Maintain onboarding materials, orientation agendas, and role‑specific documentation.
  • Partner with hiring managers to ensure smooth handoffs from recruitment to onboarding.
  • Track volunteer engagement, participation, and retention trends.

Qualifications

Required

Experience in HR generalist work, preferably in a nonprofit or startup environment.

Understanding volunteer management, engagement, and retention strategies.

Ability to build structures in ambiguous, evolving environments.

Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship‑building skills.

Comfort with remote collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Slack, Click Up, etc.).

High level of discretion, professionalism, and integrity.

Preferred

  • Prior experience in a volunteer‑driven NGO or early‑stage nonprofit.
  • Familiarity with HR compliance for nonprofits.
  • Experience developing HR processes, policies, or handbooks from scratch.
  • Background in conflict resolution, coaching, or people operations.
