About AINBI
AI Nexus for Black Innovators (AINBI) is a national organization working to advance Black leadership, participation, innovation, and economic opportunity in artificial intelligence.
Our work brings together policy, education, research, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. We want to ensure that Black Canadians are not only included in conversations about AI, but are helping shape the policies, technologies, businesses, and decisions that will define Canada’s AI future.
About the Role
Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly, and important decisions are being made now about regulation, transparency, workforce development, innovation, investment, responsible AI, and economic opportunity.
AINBI is expanding its national policy work and is seeking a Volunteer Director of Policy to help identify emerging issues, develop policy priorities, strengthen stakeholder relationships, and advance AINBI’s national policy agenda.
The Director of Policy will work closely with AINBI leadership and help coordinate the National Advisory Council on Inclusive AI and Black Innovation.
This is a strategic leadership role for someone interested in helping ensure that Black perspectives, leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic interests are represented in Canada’s evolving AI policy landscape.
Key Responsibilities
The Volunteer Director of Policy will:
- Coordinate the National Advisory Council on Inclusive AI and Black Innovation and support its policy priorities
- Identify emerging AI policy issues, opportunities, and gaps affecting Black Canadians
- Monitor federal and provincial consultations and opportunities for policy engagement
- Build relationships with government, industry, researchers, universities, nonprofits, and community organizations
- Support the development of policy briefs, recommendations, consultation submissions, and discussion papers
- Help develop national policy initiatives, stakeholder consultations, and roundtables
- Represent AINBI in selected policy meetings, consultations, and external discussions
- Collaborate with AINBI leadership to strengthen the organization’s national policy voice
- Help translate complex AI policy developments into practical recommendations and priorities
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is strategic, curious, collaborative, and comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will have experience or strong knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
- Public policy
- Artificial intelligence or technology policy
- Government relations
- Research and policy analysis
- Law or regulation
- Economic development
- Digital policy
- Stakeholder and community engagement
Strong candidates will be able to understand emerging and complex policy issues and translate them into clear, practical recommendations.
Strong writing, communication, relationship-building, research, and coordination skills are important.
Experience working with government, universities, research institutions, technology organizations, nonprofits, community organizations, or industry would be an asset.
Knowledge of the experiences, barriers, and opportunities facing Black communities in Canada is especially valuable.
We are particularly interested in someone who understands that Black participation in AI is not only about addressing bias and potential harms. It is also about leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, ownership, investment, skills development, and economic opportunity.
