Background:

The Digital Sexual Violence Support Centre (DSVSC) is a Canadian and federally-incorporated nonprofit that provides nation-wide peer support, workshops, community outreach and research to help adults who have experienced technology-facilitated sexual violence. The includes adults living in Canada who have faced online sexual harassment, doxxing, intimate image abuse, cyber-stalking, and the creation of sexual deepfake images and videos. The DSVSC operates on a virtual basis.

Role: Director of Human Resources

Reports to: Executive Director


Term: 6 months

Monthly Time Commitment: 4-8 hours

Role Summary: The Volunteer Director of Human Resources will oversee and manage the human resource functions for the DSVSC’s operational department. The Director will provide strategic leadership by updating and overseeing the implementation of our HR handbook, volunteer relations, talent management and staff’s educational development.

Description:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to identify and take into account the DSVSC’s staffing and recruitment needs and then provide suggested next steps for equitable and efficient scaling of the DSVSC
  • Implement a standard protocol for the DSVSC’s volunteer recruitment processes
  • Develop and present an HR strategy to the DSVSC’s Executive Team which covers efficient succession planning, performance assessment, and staff development
  • Conduct thorough and equitable investigations into policy violations as needed and provide advice for next steps
  • Manage corporate health, safety and wellness initiatives and ensure that all volunteers and contract workers are aware of their labour rights
  • Create a standard for managing the recruitment process (including overseeing the creation and implementation of candidate grading profiles)
  • Maintain organized and securely handle records related to HR policies, documents and files
  • Work closely with the Executive Director (ED) to advise on matters pertaining to HR
  • Oversee and delegate tasks to a team of 2-3 Human Resource Associates
  • Maintain up-to-date industry knowledge on emerging promising practices and considerations in volunteer retention, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and psychological safety in the workplace
  • Ensure that the DSVSC’s policies comply with federal requirements for Canadian nonprofits
  • Develop and sustain a protocol for mediating any potential conflicts or grievances from volunteers
  • Attend bi-monthly Executive Team meetings and provide HR related updates

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Partial or full completion of a Bachelor’s degree in human resources, public administration, business administration, labour relations or a related field
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion when handing sensitive documents
  • Demonstrated sound judgement and commitment to equitable recruiting and HR-related processes
  • Excellent understanding of the recruitment process, workplace safety and wellness practices
  • Willing to learn about technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV)
  • Strong supervision capabilities
  • Comfortable delegating tasks and overseeing a team of at least 2 volunteers
  • Capable of prioritizing tasks and actively contribute to the executive team’s decision making

Preferred (Optional) Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with volunteer retention strategies
  • Previous experience working for a nonprofit or a charity
