Unpaid Volunteer Position

We are seeking enthusiastic and compassionate volunteers to support a community-based Creative Arts & Crafts program in the Carlington neighbourhood. The program’s purpose is to bring neighbours together to connect, explore their creative interests, and build community through shared artistic activities. Volunteers will work with people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

Role Summary

As a Creative Arts & Crafts Facilitator, you will design and lead weekly two-hour sessions that encourage participation, skill development, and social connection. You may propose projects that reflect your own artistic interests and strengths—whether painting, collage, fibre arts, sculpture, mixed media, sewing, quilting or simple craft activities—while adapting materials and approaches so everyone can participate.

Time Commitment

Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two hours per week. Sessions are typically scheduled at consistent times to promote regular attendance and stable group dynamics. Flexibility for occasional additional hours for preparation or special events is appreciated but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead a two-hour weekly arts and crafts session based on a clear, accessible activity outline.
  • Create a welcoming, respectful atmosphere that values diversity and inclusion.
  • Adapt activities and materials for varied skill levels, ages, and abilities, including low-cost or easily sourced supplies.
  • Encourage participation, collaboration, and peer-to-peer learning among neighbours.
  • Manage basic set-up and clean-up of the space and materials.
  • Ensure safety and accessibility during sessions, including awareness of allergies, mobility needs, and sensory considerations.
  • Communicate with program coordinators about attendance, supply needs, and any concerns or highlights from sessions.

Qualifications & Attributes

  • Enthusiasm for arts, crafts, and community engagement; prior teaching or facilitation experience is an asset but not essential.
  • Ability to plan simple, engaging projects and to break tasks into manageable steps for participants.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to work with people from diverse cultural, socio-economic, and age groups.
  • Commitment to inclusive practice: respecting diverse identities, abilities, and cultural expressions.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent weekly commitment.
  • Willingness to follow community centre policies and health and safety guidelines.

Support & Training

Volunteers will receive an orientation to the program, an overview of inclusive facilitation strategies, and any necessary training on site policies and safety procedures. Ongoing support and mentorship from program staff or experienced volunteers will be provided.

Materials & Program Design

Volunteers are welcome to design programs that reflect their own interests and abilities. Facilitators should plan activities that are adaptable and accessible; use low-cost or donated materials when possible. The program encourages creativity, experimentation, and sharing of techniques among participants.

Diversity & Inclusion

The Carlington Creative Arts & Crafts program is committed to creating a safe, inclusive space where all neighbours feel respected and valued. Volunteers must demonstrate respect for cultural differences, varied abilities, and diverse expressions of creativity. Facilitators should use inclusive language, provide multiple ways to participate, and be mindful of accessibility needs.
