We have been working collaboratively to support the needs and interests of local communities in Southwest Scarborough since 1970. As a multi-service charitable organization, we provide essential supports like assisted living, daycare and meal programs, while also supporting caring, compassionate, just and interdependent community life for all.

The Board Director Role

We currently have openings for qualified candidates to join our board of directors. Non-profit experience is an asset, as is residency or employment within the Toronto municipal boundary, with preference for volunteers living in Warden Woods or Scarborough.

  • This individual should be an experienced leader with a proven track record in community action, business, governance, project and process management or similar skills
  • An excellent communicator willing to listen and provide input and assist consistently with making decisions on governance needs of the organization.
  • A team player that is able to work well with a diverse board of directors.
  • Looking for candidates in a senior leadership role from all sectors (i.e., health, social services, education, finance, marketing, fundraising)
  • Experience as a Director of a Nonprofit Governance Board is a definite asset.

The Board will support the work of WWCC and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by WWCC’s Executive Director (ED), the Board/ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as they develop and implement WWCC’s strategic plan
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by WWCC for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Governance of WWCC’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the ED
  • Assisting the board chair in identifying, recruiting and orienting other Board Members
  • Partnering with the ED and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
  • Serving on committees and task groups and taking on special assignments
  • Representing WWCC to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
  • Ensuring WWCC’s commitment to a diverse board that reflects the communities WWCC serves

Terms, Commitment, & Participation

WWCC’s Board Members will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for two additional terms. Board meetings will be held monthly and committee meetings will be held approximately monthly in coordination with full board meetings. Meetings are generally held in the evenings and are often online. Board members are expected to attend all board meetings with only rare exceptions. Each board member is expected to participate in at least one committee. Time commitment is approximately 6 hours per month, including meetings and correspondence.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about WWCC’s mission and who has a track record of leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to provide general fiduciary and strategic board support.

In order to maintain a well-balanced board, we may from time-to-time require specific experience and/or skill sets such as finance, legal, program and community insights, human resources, fundraising, etc.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
  • A commitment to and understanding of WWCC’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
  • Ability to contribute to strategic planning, understand board responsibilities, and oversee organizational governance
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

At WWCC, our board diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the core of who we are. Our commitment to these values is unwavering. They are central to our mission and our impact within a wonderfully diverse community. We know that having an inclusive board with varied perspectives helps to generate better ideas to support the needs of our multi-faceted community.
