About Raising the Roof

Raising the Roof is a national charitable housing developer dedicated to creating and operating affordable housing and shaping solutions that help make homelessness preventable in Canada.

For more than 25 years, Raising the Roof has contributed to homelessness prevention through research, public engagement, innovative pilot projects, and community partnerships. Since 2019, the organization has expanded its work into the development, ownership, and operation of affordable and supportive housing across multiple provinces.

Today, Raising the Roof is scaling a national housing portfolio while strengthening the partnerships, capital models, and operational systems required to deliver long-term, sustainable housing solutions. Through disciplined development, strong community partnerships, and innovative financing approaches, the organization is working to expand affordable housing supply while contributing to the prevention and reduction of homelessness across Canada.

Position Overview

As a Volunteer Board Member, you will play an important role in supporting the governance, strategic direction, and long-term sustainability of Raising the Roof during a period of national growth and organizational evolution.

The Board of Directors is seeking individuals who bring strategic expertise, leadership experience, and networks that can support the organization’s mission and strategic priorities. In particular, the organization is seeking Board members with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Fundraising & Strategic Partnerships

Experience in philanthropy, donor engagement, corporate partnerships, campaign leadership, and/or access to networks that can support organizational growth and long-term sustainability.

  • Housing Operations

Knowledge of affordable and supportive housing operations, asset stewardship, tenant stability, property management, and operational excellence in housing delivery.

  • Government Relations & Advocacy

Experience working with municipal, provincial, and/or federal governments, including public policy, funding programs, stakeholder engagement, and systems-level advocacy related to housing and homelessness.

  • Social Finance & Capital Strategy

Expertise in social finance, impact investing, community bonds, blended capital, housing finance, and innovative funding structures that support affordable housing development.

  • Partnerships & Sector Leadership

Experience building collaborative relationships across the non-profit, private, philanthropic, and public sectors, with the ability to strengthen RTR’s role as a national housing partner and convener.

Board members are expected to contribute strategic guidance, oversight, and leadership while supporting Raising the Roof’s commitment to operational excellence, accountability, sustainable growth, and community impact.

Key Responsibilities

Board members collectively support the governance and strategic direction of Raising the Roof and help ensure the organization remains aligned with its mission, values, and long-term strategic priorities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic oversight and governance in support of the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Supporting the responsible growth of RTR’s national housing portfolio through disciplined governance, risk management, and long-term stewardship.
  • Contributing expertise, relationships, and strategic guidance in areas such as fundraising, housing operations, government relations, advocacy, partnerships, and social finance.
  • Supporting the organization’s efforts to strengthen sustainable capital and funding models, including philanthropy, government funding, and innovative social finance approaches.
  • Acting as ambassadors for Raising the Roof by strengthening community relationships, advancing awareness, and supporting fundraising and partnership opportunities.
  • Participating actively in Board meetings, committees, strategic planning processes, and organizational events.
  • Upholding fiduciary responsibilities and ensuring accountability to tenants, funders, donors, partners, and the public.
  • Supporting RTR’s commitment to collaboration, sustainability, equity, operational excellence, and measurable impact.

The Board of Directors meets remotely on a quarterly basis, with occasional additional meetings, or involvement in organizational events and strategic initiatives throughout the year.

Directors may contribute to ad hoc committees that are formed on an as-needed basis from time to time. They are also expected to contribute to Raising the Roof’s fundraising initiatives and draw upon their networks in support of the organization’s work.

The total average monthly time commitment is 2-5 hours, depending on a Director’s position.

Note: This is a volunteer position. Reasonable travel and other associated expenses may be covered as part of your service.
