Mission Services is a non-profit, multi-sector social service agency who believes every person deserves access to healthy food, safe housing, and opportunities for tomorrow and we are on a mission to end poverty and to create safe places for individuals to learn, heal and grow.
We accomplish this by offering professional services in a caring and dignified manner for every person who comes through our doors – without discrimination based on faith, race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, educational status, or sexual orientation.
With a staff of approximately 200, we serve thousands of individuals annually. Thousands of individuals are served annually through Addictions Treatment, Emergency Food Support, Drop-In for homeless and marginally housed female identified persons, Emergency shelter for female identified persons and children fleeing violence and abuse, Emergency shelter for men experiencing homelessness, Housing First Programs and Intensive Case Management, Children’s After School programming.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Mission Services is currently seeking a volunteer Board member with experience or understanding of the issues of homelessness, Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence or Addictions and Mental Health issues.
Our Board of Directors follows a policy governance model and provides leadership where appropriate in advocating for change in our Community and in Government legislation to enhance the welfare, health and social functioning of people served by Mission Services of Hamilton.
The Board of Directors of Mission Services represents the organization’s members in determining and requiring appropriate organizational performance. The Directors are accountable to members, key stakeholders and the community in general.
The Board strives to be informed about and connected to the work of Mission Services. The Board reviews and develops governing policies with respect to organizational ends and outcomes and ensures the implementation of the Strategic Plan through a relationship with the Executive Director.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare for and attend board meetings
- Work as a team member and support board decisions
- Review, clarify and amend the mission and objectives of the organization
- Develop, amend and approve by-laws and governing policies.
- Monitor the performance of the organization
- Keep informed about community issues relevant to the work of Mission Services
- Participate in the recruitment of new Board members
- Participate in Board Committees
- Participate in strategic planning processes
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of community services (addictions, mental health, housing, poverty and violence against women)
- Commitment to the organization’s mission
- Time (as required)
- Openness to learning
- Value and support the principles of EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion)
HOURS OF WORK:
Time Commitment: Approximately 11 meetings per year (9 regular monthly meetings and 2 half day planning sessions). Additionally, we encourage all board members to participate in one sub-committee meeting with a minimum commitment of 2-3 meetings annually
