Board of Director

Halton Region, Ontario | Volunteer Board Position

Help build an organization where survivor voices lead the way.

SAFE – Survivor Advocates for Empowerment is a survivor-led nonprofit organization supporting and advocating for people affected by gender-based violence.

Built for survivors, by survivors, SAFE is creating a community where survivors are believed, supported without judgement, and empowered to determine what support looks like for them.

As SAFE continues to grow, we are seeking committed and collaborative individuals to join our Board of Directors and help shape the next stage of our organization.

Who We're Looking For

We welcome candidates who believe strongly in SAFE's mission and can contribute their experience, perspective and skills to a growing nonprofit organization.

We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Nonprofit governance and organizational development
• Fundraising, grants and donor development
• Finance, accounting or financial oversight
• Legal, governance, policy or risk management
• Marketing, communications or public relations
• Community partnerships and business development
• Gender-based violence, social services or advocacy

You do not need to have experience in every area.

We value people who are compassionate, thoughtful and willing to contribute. SAFE is building a Board whose members bring different skills, experiences and perspectives while sharing a commitment to survivor-centred work.

What Being a SAFE Director Means

SAFE is a growing organization, and this is an opportunity to help build something meaningful from the ground up.

Our Board provides strategic leadership, fiduciary and governance oversight, policy stewardship and organizational direction. Directors may also contribute their expertise through committees, fundraising, partnerships and other areas important to SAFE's development.

This is a volunteer, unpaid Board position.

SAFE's Board operates collectively. Directors have equal voting power, with responsibilities divided by function rather than hierarchy.

Our Commitment

SAFE believes survivors.

We believe support should be compassionate, non-judgemental and guided by what each survivor needs.

We welcome people from diverse backgrounds, identities, cultures, professions and lived experiences. Our work is not guided by political, religious or ideological affiliation. It is guided by our commitment to survivors and to addressing gender-based violence.

Lived experience can bring an invaluable perspective to this work, but you do not need to disclose personal experiences of violence or trauma to apply or serve with SAFE.
