We invite passionate, committed individuals to bring their leadership, skills and experience to our volunteer Board of Directors, where we can work together to ignite positive impact.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to make a difference, consider joining our Board of Directors. We aim to build a Volunteer Board of Directors and Committee system that reflects the diversity and perspectives of the community we serve, and we strongly encourage applications from all underrepresented groups.

Commencing May 2026, this opportunity is for a three (3) - year term.

The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience and strengths in one or more of the following areas:

Corporate / Board Governance

  • Strong understanding of non-profit governance, including fiduciary responsibilities and board dynamics

Child Care

  • Knowledge of the child care and early learning sector, including regulatory and funding environments

Government Relations, Regional and Municipal

  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with municipal and/or provincial or regional stakeholders
  • Skilled in advocacy, strategic partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and influencing outcomes

Engineering, Construction, and Property Management

  • Experience overseeing capital projects, facilities, or real estate portfolios
  • Strong project management skills/property development

Philanthropic Cultivation & Stewardship

  • Proven ability to build and sustain relationships with donors, partners, and community stakeholders
  • Experience with donor stewardship, major gifts, and philanthropic cultivation

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • A willingness to volunteer time and talent in a volunteer Board position and on committees of the Board.
  • A keen sense of community and volunteerism.
  • A strong understanding of and connection to the Oakville community. Residency in the community we serve is considered an asset.
  • ICD (Institute of Corporate Directors) or other board governance education is a strong asset.

Board Responsibilities:

  • Participation in Director monthly meetings, support committee work, Board meetings, and preparation – (five to eight hours each month, September to May).
  • Board members are also encouraged to attend YMCA events and celebrations.
  • Ensure that the YMCA of Oakville’s By-Laws are followed and remain current and relevant.
  • Ensure that the YMCA’s vision and strategic plan are consistent with the organization’s values and mission and have a positive impact on the community at large.
  • Support management in the association’s philanthropic and fundraising efforts such as, cultivating and building donor relationships.
  • Understand and influence, where necessary, public policies that affect the YMCA.
  • Act as an ambassador of the Y and report to the community, YMCA members, and participants at the Annual General Meeting.

Additional Requirements:

Prior to confirmation of a volunteer Board position all applicants must submit a valid Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) which is less than 6 months old. The offer will be conditional upon the positive completion of 3 (three) professional reference checks.
