Join Our Board as a Financial Advisor & Successor Treasurer
Are you a financial professional looking to give back to your community in a high-impact, strategic way? Safe City Mississauga is seeking an experienced individual with an accounting background to join our Board of Directors. In this role, you will provide fiscal oversight, support our current Treasurer, and prepare to step into the Treasurer role in the future.
The Role: Strategic Fiscal Stewardship
At Safe City Mississauga, we operate under the Policy Board Model (Carver). This means the Board focuses on high-level results and accountability, acting as advisors rather than managers. The Executive Director (ED) manages all day-to-day operations and financial administration, while you provide the strategic lens to ensure our mission remains sustainable.
About us: Safe City Mississauga is a registered charitable organization founded in 1992 to help reduce criminal opportunity and criminal victimization in Mississauga. We provide resources, staff, professional community leadership and guidance for crime prevention programs and activities; encourage crime prevention education within the public, private and voluntary sectors; and research, develop and implement new community crime prevention programs and activities.
Our Board of Directors champion the importance of exceptional board leadership and believe that each organization needs a strong and effective board to fully realize its potential for good.
Policy Board Model (Carver): Policy Board Models share the view that the job of the board is: to establish the guiding principles and policies for the organization; to delegate responsibility and authority to those who are responsible for enacting the principles and policies; to monitor compliance with those guiding principles and policies; to ensure that staff, and board alike are held accountable for their performance. Strategic planning and fundraising are seen as a part of the board’s responsibilities.
Board meetings are held every third or fourth Tuesday 7:30 to 8:30am - virtually. Safe City Mississauga’s Annual General Meeting is held in May or June.
Director KSA's: Safe City Mississauga is currently accepting applications from individuals who have an interest in serving on the organization’s Board of Directors with a strong Accounting/Finance background and desire to serve as the Treasurer or be the Director in succession to the Treasurer.
We are looking for a candidate who brings both technical proficiency and a strategic mindset to the table: Accounting Expertise: A strong foundation in accounting principles (CPA designation preferred) and experience with non-profit financial reporting. Financial Strategy: The ability to synthesize complex financial data to support long-term strategic planning and decision-making. Risk Management: Insight into monitoring financial risks and ensuring robust internal controls. Community Connection: You live in Mississauga or have a significant connection to the city and a desire to see it thrive. Governance Savvy: Prior board experience or a solid understanding of the distinction between governance and operations.
The Treasurer is to advise staff and Board on financial matters affecting Safe City Mississauga. Duties include overseeing the review and revision of financial policies and procedures by the Board. Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and its presentation to the Board for review and approval. Ensure that the appropriate financials are prepared by staff and reviewed by the Board at each Board meeting. Ensure that the Board regularly monitors the organization’s financial performance and alerts it to any important discrepancies between planned and actual figures. Ensure that the organization staff maintains the appropriate financial books and records and that these are accurate and up to date. The Executive Director will report on government tax filings and remittances, payroll and other liabilities and on excess funds and reserves. You are verifying. The Executive Director will manage grants and service delivery contracts in accordance with the requirements of the funders. You are verifying. The Executive Director will meet with the external auditor annually to identify any financial control and record keeping problems or deficiencies and oversee action by the Bookkeeper/Accountant to address them. You are verifying. The ED recommends to the Board the need for a review or renewal of the auditing services provided and presents the organization’s financial report and recommend appointment or reappointment of auditor at the Annual General Meeting. You are verifying.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
In addition to the qualifications of every Director, to be elected as the Treasurer one must have: A background in financial accounting or relevant equivalent. An understanding of, and experience with, good financial management and reporting practices. An appreciation of the level of financial information needed at a Board level to support decision making. Sufficient time to devote to the above duties. Ideally, the successful candidate will also have experience working with not-for-profit organizations.
Volunteer time: approximately 3-5 hours per month

Residency Requirement: Members must live in or have a significant connection to Mississauga
Membership Requirement: $25 annual dues
General Board Director qualifications: In addition, we are seeking an individual with essential qualities and capabilities of a member of any board of directors, namely the ability to synthesize and analyze complex information, the ability to think conceptually and strategically, knowledge of governance and an understanding of the role of a board of director. The individual should demonstrate being well-positioned in the Mississauga community, has credibility amongst a strong network, and experience of championing community causes that effect all the residents of Mississauga at some level. Our board members strive to be active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engaged in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for Safe City Mississauga to advance its mission.

BOARD RESPONSIBILITIES
The Board of Directors exercise trusteeship on behalf of the organization membership and the community. The Board will be accountable to funding sources for monies spent and to the community for all services offered by the organization.
The Board will focus on broad, significant, long-term issues related to crime prevention in Mississauga. In general, detailed, operational issues will be the responsibility of the staff, within the parameters of Board- defined outcomes and expectations which will be outlined in the Service Plan, funding documents, policies and other documents for the organization. The Board will function as a results-oriented body.
Board member must:
- Adhere to the highest standards of integrity and dedication;
- Recognize the importance of his/her public service;
- Attend bi-monthly Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting;
- Participate in sub-committees as needed;
- Be prepared to fulfill his/her responsibilities in the best interests of the organization and residents of Mississauga;
- Participate constructively and consistently at all meetings and be prepared to engage in deliberations;
- Not attempt to exercise individual authority, except as set forth in Board policy;
- To recognize that governance rests with the Board collectively;
- Be a constructive ambassador for the organization;
- Identify and inform the Board of a conflict of interest.
