Are you looking for a meaningful role working with volunteers in an organization committed to personal and social change? With strong program development and implementation, the Volunteer and Communications Coordinator leads our Volunteer Program. This position also works closely with the Community Relations and Community Development programs to help raise the profile of the House in ways that celebrate community strengths and commitment to addressing inequities by developing online and community engagement.

West Neighbourhood House, formerly St. Christopher House, is a multi-service, neighbourhood-based agency that has served the diverse communities of downtown west Toronto since 1912. The central purpose of West Neighbourhood House is to enable less-advantaged individuals, families, and groups in the community to gain greater control over their lives and community. Our diverse programs and community development activities support approximately 16,000 people of all ages annually in addition to ongoing public policy development and advocacy on social and economic issues.

Responsibilities:

• Lead program planning and development of the Volunteer Program.

• Coordinate and support volunteer recruitment, orientation, matching, screening, retention, and appreciation, with various West Neighbourhood House (West NH) programs.

• Collaborate with program teams to develop volunteer opportunities, as well as support onboarding, retention, and trouble-shooting processes.

• Contribute to West NH communications strategy with a focus on volunteer-related communications, supporting social media, website updates, newsletter, etc. including content development.

• Enhance profile of the House through liaising with relevant stakeholders, donors, and networks.

• Provide support for recruitment and onboarding of placement students, interns, as well as directly supervising volunteer program staff.

• Continually learn and keep abreast of trends, best practices in volunteerism and community engagement; to support program monitoring and evaluation.

• Various administrative duties, including data collection, program records, reporting, etc.

• Contribute to the Capacity-Building Programs and Systemic Change Cluster through active participation on joint initiatives, committees, and House-wide events.

Qualifications:

• Education and formal training equivalent to a university degree in volunteer development, human resources, community development, communications, or public relations.

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with volunteers or equivalent work.

• Strong knowledge of principles of volunteerism, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Demonstrated skills in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

• Strong skills working with individuals and groups (e.g. intake, matching, conflict resolution etc.) applying a strengths-based model.

• Demonstrated communications skills to create social media, website, newsletter, other content, etc.

• Excellent interpersonal skills including collaboration, teamwork, and ability to both apply and extend diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.

• Strong digital knowledge skills such as Microsoft Office, digital meeting platforms, fundraising or

Client Record Management databases (Alyacare or similar), design/publishing software.

• Demonstrated curiosity and commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.

• Ability to work independently and take initiative, as well as work collaboratively in teams.

• Ability to work remotely as well as on-site.

• Flexibility in scheduling and ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

• Ability to travel frequently within the catchment area.

• Knowledge of another language relevant in our catchment area is an asset.
