Unpaid Volunteer Position

At Gilda's Toronto, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. We're looking for a compassionate and dedicated individual to join our volunteer community as a Virtual T'ai Chi Facilitator, offering gentle movement and breathwork to support members' wellbeing.

Purpose of the Role:

To lead a virtual, low-intensity T'ai Chi program that promotes relaxation, gentle movement, and connection to Gilda's Toronto members who have been impacted by cancer. Sessions should be welcoming, adaptable, and supportive of a wide range of abilities.

Time Commitment:

  • Remote position; must be able to work from home in a private space
  • Facilitate a one-hour weekly group for a minimum of one year
  • Scheduled to be set in advance with the Virtual Program Coordinator (Supervisor)
  • Stat holidays and office closures will be shared in advance

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a safe, accessible, and high-quality virtual T'ai Chi program using Zoom
  • Establish a consistent class schedule with Supervisor
  • Use reliable technology and the Zoom platform comfortably and securely
  • Ensure a private space while facilitating to protect member confidentiality
  • Check in regularly with Supervisor about program updates or concerns – volunteers are not expected to resolve member issues
  • Report volunteer hours monthly
  • Respect the confidentiality of all member, volunteer, or staff information that you may become aware of while volunteering
  • Notify Supervisor promptly if unable to attend a scheduled session
  • Respond to member questions within the program hour
  • Attend quarterly facilitation meetings
  • Maintain clear professional boundaries and member confidentiality
  • Uphold Gilda's Toronto's mission and values

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Training or certification in a T'ai Chi course
  • Minimum 6 months of experience leading T'ai Chi
  • Experience facilitating groups
  • Ability to offer alternative movements and modifications for diverse abilities and medical/physical needs
  • Effective communication skills; fluency in English
  • Comfortable using Zoom in a secure, private environment
  • Patient, reliable, punctual, and adaptable
  • Sensitivity to individuals impacted by cancer
  • Familiarity with working with adults experiencing cancer-related stress is an asset
  • Current registration with a professional regulatory body is advantageous

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Submit an application form
  • Attend an interview
  • Provide two references
  • Complete a police check (facilitated by the organization; an annual declaration may be required)
  • Sign confidentiality and release forms
  • Complete volunteer orientation and required training
  • Provide copies of relevant fitness certifications
