BOARD OF DIRECTORS: TRUSTEE OPPORTUNITY

As Food For The Poor–Canada (FFTP-Canada) enters a new and exciting strategic phase, we invite dedicated individuals to join our Board of Directors and support our mission to advance social justice across the Caribbean and Latin America.

As a Trustee, you will provide stewardship and governance oversight, contribute to strategic direction, and support the long-term sustainability of the organization. Trustees hold legal responsibility for governance and ensure alignment with FFTP-Canada’s charitable mandate. This voluntary role offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute professional expertise, lived experience, and ethical leadership in service of vulnerable communities.

About Us

Rooted in faith and guided by compassion, Food For The Poor (FFTP) began in 1982 in Jamaica and has since grown to be the largest non-profit in its respective host-countries (Jamaica, Haiti, and Guyana) and is one of the largest international charities based in the US.

In 2008, FFTP-Canada was launched to join the broader FFTP network working to create pathways that empower individuals, families, and communities out of poverty. We provide urgent relief while developing sustainable programs addressing the multi-dimensional factors of poverty in Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana, and Honduras. Our work focuses on five core pillars: food security, housing and community, education, health, and economic empowerment. Emergency Response serves as a sixth pillar activated to help people overcome and recover from tragedies.

FFTP’s network has strong in-country relationships with community leaders, government offices, churches, schools, hospitals, orphanages, and other NGO partners. We are proud to have earned the trust of the communities we serve.

We Welcome Individuals Who

  • Believe poverty is not inevitable and advocate for equity and dignity.
  • Bring strong professional networks and are comfortable serving as organizational ambassadors.
  • Are interested in and/or affinity with the Caribbean and Latin American region.
  • Will commit time to quarterly board meetings and an annual strategy session, with meetings held both in person and virtually. Participation in other organizational events is also required.
  • Can sit on a committee to move our goals forward.

Expertise We Seek

  • Philanthropy/Strategic Partnerships: build and steward relationships, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and advance resource mobilization to support transformative work and impact.
  • Communications/Public Affairs: amplify our mission, advocacy priorities, and community voices through values‑driven storytelling and public engagement.
  • Finance/Accounting: provide fiduciary oversight, financial stewardship, and strategic guidance, including Treasurer-level experience.
  • Legal/Governance: ensure accountability, transparency, and strong governance practices supporting compliance, risk oversight, and organizational stewardship.
  • Operations or Human Resources: strengthen people‑centred systems, organizational culture, and overall well-being.

What You Will Gain

  • The opportunity to make a lasting, mission-driven impact on individuals, families, and communities across the Caribbean and Latin America.
  • Trustee-level leadership experience within an international philanthropic and social justice framework.
  • Engagement with a committed network of trustees, senior leaders, and a passionate mission-driven team united by shared values, purpose, and accountability.
  • The deep fulfilment of supporting essential, rights‑based programs that uphold dignity, strengthen livelihoods, and reflect our call to love and serve our neighbours.
