Bereaved Families of Ontario – Ottawa Region (BFO Ottawa) is a registered charitable organization that has supported the Ottawa grieving community since 1978. Our mission is one rooted in compassion: We inspire hope and healing for people grieving the death of a significant person in their life - no one should have to grieve alone. We provide peer-based support programs and education to individuals across all ages and backgrounds who are coping with the death of a significant person.
We are currently seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Directors and help guide the financial health and sustainability of our organization.
About the Role: Treasurer (Volunteer Position)
The Treasurer plays a key role in providing financial oversight and strategic input, ensuring that BFO Ottawa remains fiscally responsible and transparent in its operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and management of annual operating budget
- Oversee preparation of monthly financial statements (in collaboration with a Bookkeeper)
- Support the annual tax filing process and ensure regulatory compliance
- Serve as a signing officer on the organization’s payments and bank account
- Participate in monthly board meetings and periodic planning sessions (some in-person attendance required)
- Advise the Board on financial matters and implications
- Monitor financial policies, controls, and reporting systems
Time Commitment:
Approximately 4 to 6 hours per week
Skills & Experience:
- Financial management, accounting, or budgeting experience
- High attention to detail and organizational skills
- Familiarity with accounting software and remote collaboration tools is beneficial
- Experience with nonprofit financials or governance is an asset
