The Recovered Arts Film & Theatre Collective is the creation of Artistic Director John-David (JD) Hutchison, a Vancouver-based filmmaker and director with lived experience of the healing power of the arts in sustaining recovery from alcohol and drugs.
The Collective aims to create a community of film and theatre artists (professionals) to use the mediums of filmmaking and theatre to support others as they embark on and maintain lives in recovery. Individuals are empowered to explore their journey, from the reasons for addiction through to living life in sobriety, through storytelling and creative wellbeing activities. The program supports sustained recovery from addictions of all kinds by building community and articulating experiences to support positive change.
By creating safe and inviting spaces to learn, live, and grow, this community assists those in recovery to find healing through the creative arts
Goal: Apply artistic expression to support sustained recovery
- Share passion and knowledge of the technique of filmmaking and theatre production to inspire continued recovery though living a creative life.
- Peer-to-peer education in film and theatre-based creative outlets, including:
- Filmmaking - Screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, and acting.
- —Theatre - Playwriting, directing, stagecraft, and acting.
The Recovered Arts Collective is seeking a volunteer treasurer and board member. The role will provide financial oversight, support with budgeting, and hold bank signing authority. This one-year term begins in as soon as possible. The approximately 4-5 hours/month time commitment includes monthly, remote-friendly board meetings, committee work or strategic planning sessions, occasional document review, community engagement, or mentorship. This is a volunteer opportunity.
Responsibilities:
- Ensuring adequate accounting records are maintained in respect of the Collective’s financial transactions.
- Approve financial transaction as a second signatory
- Coordinate with accounting service providers and external auditors to ensure monthly preparation of financial statements and annual review engagement.
- Assist with the application to CRA for charitable status.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Professional experience in accounting, finance, or bookkeeping (CPA designation is an asset but not required.)
- Familiarity with Canadian charitable organization financial practices and CRA reporting requirements.
- We strongly support applicants with lived experience of addiction, as well as persons from the IPBOC and LGBTQ+ communities.
- A commitment to transparency, accuracy, and accountability in financial oversight.
- The ability to present financial information clearly to a non-financial audience (e.g., board members.)
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Strategic leadership experience – Prior involvement with board membership or executive leadership is an asset.
