We are a well established, purpose driven, non-profit organization, seeking a Treasurer to join our volunteer Board of Directors. Through diverse and innovative programs, we strive to create lasting community impact and support those who need it most.
As Treasurer, you will collaborate with the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership to provide strategic financial oversight to the organization as it continues to grow. You will support the board in ensuring strong financial stewardship sustainability, and compliance in alignment with PHAS’s mission and long-term strategy.
Our board functions as a non-operational governance body, guiding the organization’s direction and ensuring accountability, while staff manage the day-to-day operations.
About Pleasant Heights After School (PHAS)
PHAS is a purpose-driven, community-centered non-profit dedicated to providing high‑quality, inclusive before‑ and after‑school care for over 200 children and families across 3 community-based locations in Calgary, AB. Through safe environments, caring staff, and enrichment‑focused programming, we strive to support working families and promote positive child development.

Time Commitment
This is a volunteer leadership position. The expected time commitment includes:
- Monthly virtual board meetings (scheduled in advance)
- Active participation on the Finance Committee
- Timely review of documents, reports, and communications
- Occasional ad-hoc support for strategic initiatives
Term: 2 years, renewable up to 3 terms

We are seeking candidates with:
- Senior level experience in Finance, Accounting, Audit, Risk or Financial Governance
- Experience serving on a board or board committee (preferred)
- Strong understanding of financial statements, budgeting, and internal controls
- Confidence providing guidance on strategic planning, budgeting, and compliance
- Knowledge of regulatory and compliance frameworks
Key Responsibilities
- Provide governance leadership and oversight in financial stewardship, budgeting, and risk management.
- Review and bring forward recommendations to the board regarding monthly financial statements and provide oversight, inquiry, and challenge to ensure completeness of reporting to the Board.
- Review and recommend approval of annually budgeting and oversee the approval of financial policy updates.
- Act as a liaison between the CEO and external accountants/auditors regarding year-end financial reporting and audit outcomes.
- Monitor financial performance indicators and advise on strategic investment decisions.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, CRA requirements, and accounting standards.
- Participate in Board decision-making on key initiatives, capital expenditures, and contracts.
- Champion strong internal controls and ethical financial practices.
- Serve as Chair of the Finance Committee and support donor and funding accountability.
Additionally, all board members contribute to:
- Strategic planning, mission alignment, and long-term organizational sustainability.
- Monitoring program results, financial health, and strategic benchmarks.
- Supporting stakeholder, community, and partner relationships.
- Advocating for the organization and strengthening public visibility.
- Acting in the best interest of the organization and upholding governance standards.

- Brings strategic perspective and sound judgement to governance discussions.
- Understands or is interested in learning about the unique needs of before‑ and after‑school care based childcare services.
