Position Overview
The Treasurer is a key member of the Carlington Community Connection Board, responsible for overseeing the financial affairs of the organization. This role ensures that financial practices are transparent, ethical, and in alignment with the organization's mission to support and strengthen the Carlington community.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including income, expenses, assets, and liabilities.
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and reports for the Board and membership.
- Lead the budgeting process, working with Board members and staff to develop and monitor the annual budget.
- Monitor cash flow and ensure the organization’s financial stability.
- Oversee banking activities, including deposits, payments, and reconciliations.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and charitable reporting requirements (e.g., CRA filings).
- Support fundraising efforts by providing financial guidance and tracking donations and grants.
- Advise the Board on financial planning, risks, and opportunities.
- Present financial updates at Board and annual general meetings.
- Work with the auditor or accountant to facilitate annual audits or reviews.
- Safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure proper financial controls are in place.
- Serve as a signing authority for the organization, as per Board policy.
Qualifications
- Experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or financial management (non-profit sector experience is an asset).
- Familiarity with financial software (e.g., QuickBooks) and MS Office Suite (Excel, Word).
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Commitment to ethical standards and confidentiality.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other Board members, volunteers, and staff.
- Provide mentoring and training to the Assistant Financial Officer, ensuring they develop the necessary skills and understanding to effectively support the Treasurer’s responsibilities.
- Foster professional growth through regular guidance and feedback, helping to build capacity within the organization’s financial team.
Time Commitment
The Treasurer is expected to attend regular Board meetings (monthly), the Annual General Meeting, and occasional committee meetings. The role typically requires an average of 10 hours per month, with increased hours during budgeting and audit periods.
Term
Board members, including the Treasurer, are elected for a term of two years, with the possibility of renewal as per the organization’s bylaws.
