
Treasurer (Board of Directors)
🟣Role Overview
The Treasurer is a vital officer of the Board, responsible for the financial health and fiduciary oversight of Capital Rainbow Refuge. While you are supported by a professional bookkeeper, a volunteer finance committee, and staff, you serve as the primary bridge between the organization’s financial data and the Board’s decision-making process.
🟣Organization Profile
Capital Rainbow Refuge (CRR) is a charity and non-profit organization founded in
2010 to sponsor and support sexual and gender minority refugees. It is based in the
national capital region and Eastern Ontario. CRR mentors other LGBTQI+ refugee
sponsorship groups and assists in the settlement of LGBTQI+ refugees who have
arrived by other means (including inland refugee claimants, government refugees,
and newcomers).
CRR also engages in advocacy at all levels of government as a member of the
Borders to Belonging national coalition for LGBTQ refugees.
🟣Scope of Work & Key Responsibilities
- Financial Oversight & Reporting: Chair the monthly Finance and Audit Committee meetings, prepare the agenda, and deliver a concise report to the Board of Directors.
- Audit & Compliance Management: Act as the lead liaison for external auditors to prepare documentation for year-end audits and potential CRA trust account examinations.
- Banking & Signing Authority: Serve as a primary signing authority for the organization’s accounts, including coordinating the signing of cheques for sponsorship group funds and operational expenses.
- Budgetary Strategy: Monitor government grant spending and organizational budgets to ensure sustainable growth and transparency.
- Systems Improvement: Evaluate and implement modern financial workflows, such as transitioning from physical cheque runs to electronic payment systems to increase efficiency.
- Fiduciary Accountability: Ensure the Board is fully informed of CRR's financial position so they can fulfill their legal and ethical obligations to constituents.
🟣Qualifications & Skills
- Accounting Expertise: Strong background in accounting or financial management is highly recommended to effectively supervise the bookkeeping team.
- Grant Knowledge: Experience overseeing government grant spending and reporting is a significant asset.
- Non-Profit Governance: Familiarity with non-profit financial standards, T2 corporate returns, and CRA compliance.
- Technical Proficiency: Comfort using financial tracking tools (e.g., Google Sheets, WagePoint, or similar accounting software).
🟣Time Commitment
- Weekly Capacity: This role requires approximately 5–10 hours per week during standard periods, which may increase to 15 hours during audit seasons.
- Board Meetings: Attend 10 board meetings per year (2–3 hours each) and one monthly Finance Committee meeting.
- Term: Directors are elected for a two-year term.
