
Treasurer, board of directors
Position Title: Treasurer, Board of Directors, Canadian Association of Physicians to the Environment
Reports To: Chair of the Board
Position Type: Volunteer (unpaid, expenses may be reimbursed)
Time Commitment: 3-5 hours per month, including board meetings, committee work, and financial oversight
Overview
The treasurer is a key officer of the board of directors. The treasurer provides leadership in financial oversight, risk management, and accountability, ensuring that the board carries out its fiduciary responsibilities effectively, helping to ensure the financial health, integrity, and sustainability of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure proper financial management systems and internal controls are in place.
- Ensure alignment of financial decisions with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
- Oversee the accuracy of financial statements, budgets, and forecasts.
- Present regular financial reports to the Board in an understandable and transparent manner.
- Support creation of the budget and oversee the financial audit process.
- Ensure proper maintenance of financial records in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and accounting practices.
Qualifications
- Background in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field.
- Experience with financial management and oversight, ideally in the not-for-profit sector.
- Knowledge of not-for-profit financial practices, reporting requirements, and charitable regulations.
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the organization
Term & Commitment
- Elected by the board for a term of 3 years, renewable once, according to bylaws.
- Attendance at regular board meetings (typically once every three months)
- Estimated 3–5 hours per month, depending on organizational needs and reporting cycle.
