About CPPA

Founded in 2012, the CPPA is the only Canadian not-for-profit association for the advancement of the science and practice of positive psychology. The CPPA’s vision is: A Canada where every person, workplace, and community thrives through the science of well-being. Through our strategic pillars of Learn, Practice, and Connect, we serve our vibrant community to advance the understanding and application of the science of well-being to help Canadians thrive.

Why Volunteer?

We are committed to providing meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunities, helping you grow and use your talents and strengths in a mutually satisfying environment. Whether you are starting your career or are a seasoned professional, CPPA provides a great environment for you.

Position Summary

The Treasurer will serve as the financial steward of the organization. You will ensure all aspects of financial management are sound, effective and compliant with all applicable laws and regulations. You will work closely with the other board members and relevant committees to safeguard the CPPA’s financial resources, and to contribute to the development and maintenance of sound governance, decision-making and stewardship practices for the broader organization.

Principal Duties

  • Attend all board meetings
  • Maintain knowledge of the organization and personal commitment to its goals and objectives
  • Understand and share knowledge of financial accounting for non-profit organizations
  • Ensure that appropriate financial procedures, policies and controls are in place to best manage the financial resources of the organization, protect against fraud and meet regulatory responsibilities
  • Work with our bookkeeper to keep all financial accounting up to date on a monthly basis
  • Work with our bookkeeper and accountant to ensure all statements are prepared for the Annual General Meeting
  • Report to the president on a monthly basis regarding the financial health of the CPPA
  • Work with management to ensure that appropriate financial statements are made available to, and reviewed by, the board on a timely basis
  • Work with management to ensure the annual budget and financial plan is presented to the board for approval
  • Review the annual audit and answer board members’ questions about the audit
  • Bring forward and respond to improvements in governance, decision-making and stewardship to continually improve the CPPA’s effectiveness and sustainability
  • Pitch in to assist with other projects as available

Given these responsibilities, the Treasurer will be an information and reference point for the CPPA board and team: clarifying financial implications of proposals; confirming legal requirements (as it pertains to finances and reporting); outlining the current financial status; and giving general guidance and advice on financial matters.

All board members must be members in good standing.

Who Should Apply?

  • You would like to be part of a purpose-driven organization focused on psychological well- being
  • You have a growth mindset and a can-do approach

Time Considerations:

The board meets online once a month for 1.5 hours. In addition, the Treasurer will review proposals and provide guidance and advice around the audit and on financial implications of strategic and operational plans. Total expected commitment: 4-6 hours every week.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a board member is an asset
  • You follow through on your commitments
  • Post-secondary education in accounting or finance preferred
