The Opportunity
The Globe theatre is seeking a Technical Director for the period of March through to June 5th, with a potential for a mutually agreed upon extension period.
The Technical Director works in a team environment with the Globe Theatre’s other Technical Director and the Production Manager. In conjunction with the PM, the TDs are the front line in advancing the creative team’s vision in each production.
While advancing the production’s vision, the TD will not only manage the process but will maintain the highest possible production standards, while ensuring the safety of the crews, actors, staff and audiences of the Globe Theatre. They are responsible for providing assistance and oversight to all production depts. Typical duties include; completing construction drawings where necessary, setting crew requirements for builds, supervising load-ins/outs, supervising the build and construction of pieces used in the production, as well providing leadership during the tech rehearsal period. Some hands-on assistance especially in the areas of specialized effects, or rigging elements, within each production may be required.
Candidates should have a minimum 2 years working as a Technical Director, or in a similar position, and have a comprehensive knowledge of the production process, theatrical equipment, and stage technologies.
Working closely with the Department Heads in all areas, the TD will also assist the Production Manager in management of the production budgets.
The position is a short-term employment position. If the successful candidate normally works as an independent (freelance) contractor, a sort-term contract will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting the Production Department, particularly the Technical Director and Production Manager, in the efficient management and operation of the production department;
- Assisting in producing and maintaining CAD drawings (AutoCAD and Vectorworks), rigging plans, production schedules, and other production paperwork as assigned;
- Creating, modifying and/or interpreting various technical drawings;
- Scheduling and supervising house and casual crew for the timely and successful advancement of productions;
- Maintaining production based inventories and asset tracking not overseen by other departments;
- Assisting in establishing the labour requirements for lighting, sound, wardrobe, and scenic elements for productions as assigned;
- Acting as a supervisor for the IATSE 295 house crew and casual technicians as required;
- Researching, planning, and implementing production elements;
- Providing support and co-ordination for Black Box events and activities;
- Various other production tasks as assigned by the Production Manager;
- Some evening and weekend work is required for this position.

- Knowledge of theatrical rigging, lighting, sound, video, scenic/props construction, costume construction, scenic paint, and/or special effects.
- Proficiency in drafting with CAD (AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks)
- Familiarity working alongside unionized crew would be an asset
- Strong knowledge of office software (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license with clean abstract.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, such as in and out of a pickup truck.
- Available to work evenings and weekends when required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in technical theatre management.
- Demonstrated success in aspects of technical theatre or theatrical production.
- Strong computer experience required; AutoCAD, Vectorworks a significant asset.
- Proven ability to manage budgets and safety.
- Experience leading and managing staff within a union environment.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
- A genuine appreciation for the live arts, particularly theatre, and an understanding of the production process.
- Availability for occasional evening and weekend work aligned with production schedules.
- Experience working in a team-based collaborative environment with a positive attitude towards delivering high-quality presentations.
- Prior experience in the setting and/or upholding of safety standards in the venue.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $1,000 – $1,200 per week commensurate with experience.
- Overtime will be paid out over 40 hours per week within this term.
