2025/2026 Food Banks Mississauga Tax Clinic Volunteer
Canada Revenue Agency: Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)
As a volunteer tax preparer, you will complete taxes for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation.
Location: Virtual - We offer virtual tax clinics only.
Responsibilities:
- Complete income tax returns in accordance with the Canada Revenue Agency.
- Attend training sessions as needed/requested.
- Verify taxpayer identity.
- Keep taxpayer information confidential.
- Conduct virtual sessions utilizing meeting software (Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams etc.).
- Ask questions and clarify taxpayer information when necessary.
- Use UFILE tax preparation software to file tax returns electronically.
- Utilize the CVITP hotline for any on-the-job queries regarding particular returns.
- Report concerns to the Tax Clinic Coordinator.
Reports to: Tax Clinic Coordinator
Length of Appointment: 4-6 hours a week from the end of February to the beginning of May.
Qualifications:
- Possess a good understanding of the Canadian tax system, and the process of filing returns.
- Be located in Canada.
- Act professionally and respectfully.
- Competence using computers/technology.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Empathy, patience and understanding/sensitivity to unique client needs.
- Having one or more years of experience involved with tax clinics would be an asset.
- Speaking an additional language is an asset (Arabic, Spanish, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil, Polish, or other language).
Requirements
- Must possess a Windows compatible laptop, and have space to download the UFILE software.
- Provide a clean vulnerable sector check within 3 years.
- Complete a CVITP application and required training online and choose Food Banks Mississauga as your host organization.
Boundaries and Limitations:
- Maintain confidentiality of all information encountered in the process of completing duties.
- File returns in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.
- Report any and all concerns to the Tax Clinic Coordinator.
Time Commitment:
- Minimum three hours per shift (one-time or multiple shifts available) during mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings.
- Approximately 4-6 hours of virtual webinar training through a CVITP representative (date TBD).
Training/Support Provided
- CVITP program training offered by Food Banks Mississauga staff.
- Canada Revenue Agency asynchronous webinar training covering a variety of tax situations.
- On-site helpline provided through CVITP.
- Ongoing support provided by FBM staff.
