Volunteer Survey Interviewers Needed
Volunteers are needed to conduct surveys with food bank clients about their experiences with food insecurity and poverty in Toronto. Survey results will inform the annual Who’s Hungry report published by Daily Bread Food Bank and North York Harvest Food Bank. This important research is used to advocate for solutions to end hunger and poverty in our city.
We are recruiting volunteers to conduct surveys at food bank locations across Toronto from March 15 to April 23, 2026.
In this role, volunteers will:
- Learn best practices in community-based research
- Receive training on survey administration
- Build knowledge about food insecurity in Toronto
- Expand professional networks
- Gain valuable hands-on experience in the field
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Attend a mandatory one hour training session (offered virtually during the first week of March, 2026)
- Review and become familiar with the 2026 survey questionnaire
- Introduce the survey and invite clients to participate
- Support participants by:
- Assisting with QR code access or paper copies
- Providing one-on-one assistance as needed
- Going through the survey together, question by question, when appropriate
- Commit to at least three shifts (3–4 hours each) at assigned food bank locations
- Most shifts take place Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
- Some evening and weekend shifts may be available
Skills & Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Ability to communicate effectively in English
- Available to volunteer at food banks in Central Toronto, Etobicoke, or Scarborough
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including:
- Confidence initiating conversations
- Active listening skills
- Demonstrating kindness, empathy, and respect
- Treating all individuals with dignity and without judgment
- Awareness of barriers faced by food bank clients and the ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and care
- Fluency in Arabic, Bengali, French, Hindi, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Ukrainian, or other languages is considered an asset
- Experience in community-based research and/or front-line service delivery is an asset, but not required
