
Sport Development Officer
Position Overview
The Sport Development Officer Sport Development Officer is responsible for leading and overseeing the developmental aspects of baseball programming within the Provincial Sport Organization (OBA). This role ensures that coaches, athletes, officials, and member associations receive high-quality support, education, and resources aligned with Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles, Safe Sport standards, and organizational goals. The Sport Development Officer plays a key leadership role in coach education, sport development, compliance with rules and safety standards, and system-wide best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Coach Development & Training
- Develop, implement, and evaluate coach training pathways in alignment with provincial standards.
- Assist with the oversight of coaching certifications, and ongoing professional development.
- Provide mentorship, resource support, and developmental guidance to coaches across all levels of play.
Arm Care, Player Safety & Development Standards
- Monitor and assessment of arm care and workload management standards across the province.
- Advise on evidence-based athlete development practices and contribute to injury prevention strategies.
- Work collaboratively with sport science partners, provincial teams, and medical advisors to support athlete health and performance.
Rules, Technical Standards & Compliance
- Maintain and uphold OBA technical rules, policies, and playing standards.
- Serve as a resource on rule interpretation for umpires, coaches, and member organizations.
- Support implementation of rule changes and communicate updates to the membership.
- Identify best practices and return comments/suggestions/changes to existing rules that would enhance user experience and delivery.
Incident Reporting, Monitoring & Follow-Up
- Oversee and identify the trends involving injuries, conduct, rule violations, or other technical matters from an awareness/education standpoint. Works collaboratively with Safe Sport and Integrity Officer, discipline committees, and relevant stakeholders to ensure proper resolution and documentation.
- Analyze trends and report findings to leadership to support risk management and policy improvements.
Program Administration & Leadership
- Act as a key liaison with Baseball Canada technical staff, other PSO’s, and provincial partners as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Participate in strategic and operational planning to advance baseball development in the province.
- Represent the OBA at relevant events, meetings, and conferences as assigned by the Executive Director.
Required Qualifications
- Baseball experience is mandatory as it is essential for providing credible leadership, technical expertise, and strategic direction within OBA.
- Strong knowledge of baseball rules, athlete development models, and Safe Sport practices.
- Experience leveraging incident reporting and risk management data to perform trend analysis, generate actionable insights, and support evidence-based decision-making for sport operations and safety compliance.
- Demonstrated expertise in communication, facilitation, and relationship-building.
- Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends, particularly during baseball season.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout the province as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Baseball-specific sport science knowledge including arm care, or LTAD.
- Previous experience as an umpire or sport administrator.
Work Conditions
- Combination of office-based and field-based work (meetings, events, clinics, competitions).
- Required evening and weekend work, especially April–September.
- Some provincial travel with occasional national travel.

Salary range
- $70,000 - $75,000 per year
