Position Title: Social Services Student Placement

Volunteer Type: In Person

Location: 3333 Finch Ave East

Volunteer Hours: Flexible on any weekday from 9am - 5pm

Volunteers Needed: 1

Reports to: Friendly Connection and Wellness Program Coordinator & Community Health Promotions Program Manager

Start date: January 05, 2026

Position Summary

Responsible for assisting with Friendly Connections, Security Check, Meals on Wheels, and Health Promotion Outreach Services, and providing support to clients and caregivers in-person, and by telephone in accessing services, and information as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the Friendly Connections, Security Check, Meals on Wheels service delivery
    • Works with the service teams to provide assessment, service delivery, and evaluation based on clients’ needs in a safe and timely manner.
    • Completes documentation including dated notes, service unit reports in SPLC Intranet and Alayacare database as required.
    • Reports clients’ concerns and issues, files incidence reports, and makes internal and external referrals as needed.
  • Supports and assists with health promotion activities
    • Assists in the outreach and coordination of a wide range of health education services such as wellness, health promotion, and disease prevention. 
    • Assists in conducting informational, educational, and training seminars including government, community, and health services with clientsand caregivers. 
  • Ensures clients, volunteers, and staff safety
    • Complies with the Agency’s “Client Safety”, “Risk Management” and “Health and Safety” policy and procedures and ensures the safety of clients, volunteers, and self.
    • Ensures privacy of information and maintains confidentiality of staff, volunteers, residents, and clients.
    • Identifies and reports any safety concerns/issues to supervisor/ manager immediately.
    • Taking appropriate steps/measures to resolve safety concerns/ issues raised.
  • Performs other support duties
    • Attends meetings, trainings and participates in SPLC’s activities including staff and volunteer events as required.
    • Develops good relationships with volunteers and encourages their active involvement in the Centre.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a Social Service Worker degree, or certificate program with a recognized college or university.
  • Highly detail-oriented with a focus on quality and accuracy.
  • Strong organization skills and accurate filing and record-keeping.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly action-oriented and results-oriented.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multicultural team.

Working Conditions:

  • Sitting in front of the computer terminal for long periods of time
  • May have frequent work interruptions

Orientation & Training

  • Volunteer Services will provide an orientation covering organizational policies and procedures, including COVID-19 safety measures.
  • Completion of IPAC Mandatory Training is required for all onsite positions.
  • Organizational training will be provided for all new volunteers.
  • Position-specific training and orientation will be conducted by the direct supervisor.

Supervision & Evaluation

  • Ongoing supervision and support will be provided by the Friendly Connection and Wellness Program Coordinator & Community Health Promotions Program Manager.

Other Requirements

  • Vulnerable Sector Check is mandatory.
  • Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a valid Medical Exemption Certificate is required.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
