Volunteer Position: Social Media Team Lead

Organization: BC Dementia Care Society

Location: Remote / Virtual (Based in British Columbia)

Commitment: 5–6 hours per week

Term: Minimum 6 months

Reports to: Executive Director and Project Management & Events Director

Are you passionate about digital storytelling and community impact? Do you want to use your social media and communication skills to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around dementia?

The BC Dementia Care Society is seeking a Volunteer Social Media Team Lead to help elevate our digital presence and drive our mission forward. This is a meaningful opportunity to advocate for compassion and maintenance of personhood, while building experience in nonprofit marketing and leadership.

As Social Media Lead, you will play a key role in shaping the voice of our organization, growing our reach, and creating inclusive, respectful, and informative content about dementia and the realities faced by caregivers and people living with dementia across British Columbia. Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership
  • Develop and implement a thoughtful, values-aligned social media strategy that advances our mission and reflects our person-centered approach to dementia care.
  • Coordinate with our marketing committee and executive team to plan and execute campaigns aligned with current programs, events, and awareness efforts.
  • Lead or collaborate with a small team of volunteers to deliver consistent and meaningful content across platforms.
Content Creation & Management
  • Create and schedule regular, high-quality posts on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter/X.
  • Design compelling visuals and graphics using tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite to complement written content.
  • Ensure all communications are inclusive, trauma-informed, and reflective of best practices in dementia language and representation.
Community Engagement
  • Grow and nurture our online community by responding to comments, messages, and tags in a respectful and timely manner.
  • Engage with aligned organizations, dementia advocates, and caregiver communities to foster partnerships and increase reach.
  • Promote BC Dementia Care Society events, support groups, educational resources, and fundraising initiatives.
Analytics & Reporting
  • Track performance metrics such as engagement, reach, and audience growth across platforms.
  • Provide regular reports to the marketing committee and use data insights to refine content and campaign strategies.
Staying Informed
  • Stay up to date with current conversations around dementia, inclusive language, and accessibility in communications.
  • Monitor trends in digital media and adapt strategies to align with evolving best practices in nonprofit marketing.
Qualifications & Skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Diploma, degree, or coursework in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Prior experience managing social media accounts (personal, professional, or volunteer-based).
  • Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Hootsuite, Buffer, or Meta Business Suite.
Required Skills:
  • Excellent written communication in English and visual storytelling skills.
  • Strong understanding or interest in learning about dementia, inclusive communications, and person-centered language.
  • Ability to manage multiple platforms and prioritize tasks independently while collaborating with a virtual team.
  • A commitment to respectful, empathetic communication—especially when sharing stories about people living with dementia and their families.
Additional Requirements:
  • Criminal record check required upon selection.
  • Reliable access to the internet and a computer or mobile device for remote work.
