THE OPPORTUNITY
The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) leads a national movement of individuals, organizations and communities working together to end homelessness in Canada. The CAEH works toward a Canada without homelessness. We do it by helping communities and governments across the country apply proven approaches to transform programs, policies, and systems toward the goal of ending homelessness.

THE ROLE
Reporting to the Communications Lead and operating within a small team of high-performing communications professionals, the Social Media Strategist is responsible for digital storytelling, content creation, and community engagement across multiple platforms, to support CAEH’s work to end homelessness and the housing crisis. They will develop social media strategies that build belief that homelessness can be ended; share facts, lessons and success stories; and build relationships with online communities and stakeholders. Their campaigns and content will amplify the stories of people and communities working to end homelessness in Canada – particularly those with lived experience of homelessness.
The ideal candidate is a talented and creative content creator and social media manager with experience applying their skills in the context of non-profits, issue-based advocacy and awareness-raising, political campaigns or social justice movements. The successful applicant will be passionate about bringing their skills to the work of ending homelessness in Canada.
This role supports the mission of ending homelessness by:
Using creative, compelling content to build belief that ending homelessness is possible and necessary.
Helping more people in the sector learn about effective strategies and programs to end homelessness and engaging the public in this work.
Key Responsibilities
- Social Media Strategy and Tactics: Develop and implement social media strategy that supports the organization’s mission, including leveraging emerging trends and top of funnel content to grow, engage and convert audiences across multiple platforms (i.e. Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.).
- Content Creation: Produce compelling social media content – including visual and video content – that drives action and builds belief that ending homelessness is possible, jumping on trends and innovating to reach new audiences.
- Community Engagement: Manage and monitor social media accounts, engage with followers, and build relationships with online communities, influencers and advocates to expand our reach and impact.
- Digital Campaigning: Advance digital campaigns, using social media to build awareness and convert online supporters into real-world advocates.
- Rapid Response: Support rapid-response communications for emerging issues and policy developments.
- Other Dutiesid-response communications for emerging issues and policy developments.
- Digital Inclusion: Ensure social content is accessible, trauma-informed and representative of diverse communities that CAEH serves.
- Performance Tracking & Optimization: Analyze social media engagement and campaign performance and stay informed on the latest digital trends to inform and continually improve our strategy.

ABOUT YOU
You are a passionate social media enthusiast with a knack for mapping out strategies, building online communities, and creating content that cuts through the noise and motivates people to take action. You have your finger on the pulse of the latest social media trends and best practices and can develop a social strategy to grow reach, build awareness, drive engagement and mobilize audiences. You bring experience managing social media presence for non-profits, issue-based advocacy organizations or social or political campaigns. And you’re ready to amplify the voices and stories of people working to end homelessness in Canada – particularly those with lived experience of homelessness.
Core Qualifications and Competencies
- 3+ years of experience in managing social media for non-profits, social justice movements, issue-based advocacy organizations or political campaigns OR comparable agency or corporate experience that can be applied to this context.
- Post-secondary education or training in marketing communications, social media, or related fields.
- Understanding of persuasive messaging and online organizing best practices and how to use storytelling for movement building.
- Ability to create compelling, creative content across different formats, leveraging the latest social media trends
- Experience in crisis communications and reputation management on digital platforms.
- Ability to build relationships with influencers, activists and community partners.
- Copywriting, graphic design and video editing skills (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut).
- Proficiency in social media management tools (e.g. Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Later) to optimize performance and track metrics.
- Demonstrated skills in SEO, analytics tools and paid social media advertising across a range of platforms.
- Ability to work independently and produce quality content under tight deadlines.
- A deep commitment to the mission of reducing homelessness, with a sense of urgency to drive meaningful change through public communications.
- Experience with accessibility best practices to ensure all content is inclusive and meets AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) or similar guidelines.
- Understanding of diverse populations and challenges, with experience working from a diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppression framework.
Preferred
- Lived experience of homelessness, housing insecurity, or working with affected communities is highly valued.
- Bilingual (English/French)
- On camera content creation experience.
- Understanding of how policies, legislation, and local homelessness response systems affect housing outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.

Work Environment and Travel
This position can be located anywhere in Canada with preference for a location that is easily accessible to an international airport.
This position requires the ability to work from a virtual/home office location without the standard support available at a business office.
Travel up to four times a year to communities and for meetings may be required.

Here’s what to expect during our interview process. At any stage, feel free to ask questions about our team, organization, or the role:

- First Interview (60 minutes): A deeper discussion with the hiring manager and other team members. This interview will focus on your technical skills, experience, and work style.
- Assessment: For some roles we may ask finalists to complete a brief assessment that will take approximately 2-3 hours over a 24-hour period of your choosing. An honorarium will be provided.
- Second Interview (60 minutes): A conversation with additional team members to debrief on the assessment and explore values and organizational culture alignment.
